You'll always get a solid breakfast, served fast and fresh, at this busy Belmont spot (go early to beat the wait). Bloody Marys & Garys are great, and definitely opt for the fruit cup with your bacon 'n eggs--it's a thing of beauty.
Great Breakfast – We went on a weekend and got there right before the rush (around 8:30). The waitstaff was a little overworked and it took a while to order, but once we did the food was up pretty quick.
I thought they did a great job on the breakfast. They had a fantastic assortment of fruits that came with my breakfast and the challah toast was great.
I enjoyed the decor, especially the paintings, and it was a nice day to look out the window at people walking about, although this was eventually obscured by those milling about waiting to hear their name called.
skip the cricket--rude waitstaff – I ate breakfast at about 11am on November 30th and when we arrived there was one two top in the restaurant and the place was otherwise empty, the waitress in an annoyed manner told us to sit anywhere so we sat at the booth and she asked us to move. Slightly confused and a little bothered by the fact that the restaurant was empty, we moved to a rickety table. The waitress continuted to be snotty and seems to not like her job or maybe just doesn't like to be nice to people. Bummer. I have been frequenting Cricket for years but I will make a point to not go again, based on this experience. Very unprofessional and unkind, our food order was messed up twice, and there was no one even in there but us! No excuse for this, coming from myself, a server who likes my job and likes my customers.
Cricket needs to go back to basics.... – Ate at Cricket Cafe on November 30 for breakfast. The server was not friendly and came across as someone who obviously doesn't like her job or the customers. Plates and water glass was covered in oily fingerprints and looked gross. Food was good. The table I sat at was broken and wobbley and piled next to it was the bus bins holding dirty dishes that smelled of old sour milk. This was my second chance for the Criket Cafe and they failed. I suggest they clean up the place and bring in new waitstaff.... There are plenty of other places on Belmont skip the Cricket.
Amazingly Creative Breakfasts – While visiting Portland, my friend Megan told me about Cricket Cafe and the great food. I was amazed by the menu, so many unique breakfast offerings and cocktails to pair with Breakfast! Of course great coffee drinks too. I'd recommend: The Saints Hash Go on late on weekday to guarantee a table and pray you get Jessie as your server. She is the atmosphere.
Rude service – I really want to like this place, but with the exception of one waitress who has been there forever, I've had too many encounters with rude wait staff. The food is ok, but nothing to write home about. Maybe the appeal is the alcoholic beverage.
Awesome Breakfast – I can't believe all the negative reviews I've been reading about the Cricket. My boyfriend and I love this place. The food is fresh tasting and delicious. When my family came to visit I took them here and they also loved it.The eggs florentine is my favorite with a side of veg sausage. The eggs are always perfectly poached. The restaurant is small so expect a wait on the weekends. The service has been great everytime but the food is why I keep going back. Definitely give this Portland gem a try.
Best on Belmont! – I love the food and the Bloody Mary's are worth every penny. You may run into a bit of a wait on the weekends but other than that, I have no complaints. The customer service is great here.
Clueless On All Fronts – First, a seemingly petty point, and a sweeping generalization with which I feel absolutely comfortable:
Nobody who knows anything about food refrigerates tomatoes.
And nobody who knows anything about customer service charges someone $2.20 to put 3 tiny slices of said tomato on a bagel (or, rather, a bagel-shaped piece of enriched white bread).
For that matter, nobody I know charges $7.75 for (mediocre) biscuits and gravy. That's supposed to to be the poor man's standby!
I should point out here that the staff are sweet, genuinely gracious people with whom I have no quarrel. And most of the food is passable, if unimpressive and overpriced. But the individual who designed that menu belongs in a cubicle, not a kitchen.
About a month ago, I moved into a house one block away from this establishment. Normally, one visit would've been plenty - but I have a broken leg, and the proximity is just too tempting. But after 5 visits and significant healing, I can say without question I will never again waste my money at the Cricket Cafe.
The place suffers from the following flaw in culinary logic, rampant in Portland:
If you take time-honored, classic American dishes, ad some ingredients that make for attractive adjectives on the menu, and jack the price up beyond reason, you will have achieved a "gourmet" twist on those classic dishes.
It just doesn't work that way.
Not for Vegetarians – I have been a loyal customer to the cricket for over 4 yrs, until '08. If you are a vegetarian do not go to this place as they lie about using veggie sausage in their 'vegetarian' dishes. I am sick and tired of going there and asking for veggie sausage in a dish and having them serve me meat. Do they think this is funny? Or maybe just a way to cut corners on cost.
For someone who has not eaten meat in over 10 years, I think I would know the difference. Not to mention the way it has been prepared is completely different. Watch out.. they will cut the veggie sausage into chunks - if all of the 'meat' is loose in your dish with nothing that looks like it has been cut you should be careful as every time it has turned out to be real meat... I know they may have changed their product but I have already checked on this a few times with them and apparently they haven't.
They acknowledged their mistake the first two times and replaced the meal (but didn't comp anything even when asked!) The other times after that -with myself and some friends later on the server said we just couldn't tell the difference. Tell that to the stomachs as my friends were all either throwing up had the .... and/or was in pain from having to digest the meat their bodies were not used to processing. One person even went to the doctor for not feeling well. I didn't even eat my dish and warned them all not to. The four of them were placated by the server telling them that people get confused all the time. (Not the first time I had heard that!)
I am so sad about this as I do not want to let this place go but until they stop using bacon grease and meat under this 'vegetarian friendly' joint I cannot go back. Not to mention that I got blown off when I rang them about this. That is the only reason that I am posting this here - so people can be aware of this restaurant's concern for honesty and your own individual dietary needs. Lets hope there is no pork in that bs meat.
Gone downhill fast!! – I used to love this breakfast spot and frequent it often since moving to Portland 3 yrs. ago. In the last 6 months to a year I have completely STOPPED GOING HERE. I was disappointed with my order being wrong once and chalked it up to it being a bad day for them (or me maybe). Tried to go again and the same things happened, my order was wrong again. I figured 3rd times a charm, surely it can't be awful three times in a row. It turns out that surely it can! My order was correct this time but the atmosphere was terrible, so bad I will not return. The server was obnoxious flirting with cooks and actually yelling across the restaurant in conversation to them so much I couldn't hear my friend across the table. I've never wanted to leave a bad, or no, tip this bad before. I suggest you spend your money someplace that makes you feel like you're doing each other a service instead of making one fell they are a nuisance.
