The two stars are for location and ambiance, the place is really cute. The food on the other hand, sucks. I got the happy hour bolognese on rigatoni. The sauce was way overly sweet, with very little meat, and the pasta was overcooked to the point that I didn't even need to taste it to know, it was swollen, and you could see by looking at it. My wife got the lasagna, which had a lot of stuff in it, including sweet potatoes. It was mediocre at best, I am pretty sure I could get the same quality out a frozen Amy's lasagna.

My brother and nephew ordered the special, which was some kind of seafood/mushroom/fettucini alfredo. It was by far the worst of the night. It simply tasted like canned mushrooms. It was disgusting, they had to send it back. The replaced it with the carbonara, which is actually decent. Two normal people could split one though, it is VERY rich. Combine the quite bad food with the rather high prices and this place fails on most levels. I would not come here again.

Feels like Home – To start off with, I have to say that this restaurant has exceptional food, everything we had we fully enjoyed.

We arrived at 7pm with about 8 other tables being occupied at the time.

We felt welcomed with our server as well as the host who sat us and brought over water and warm bread.

The server was friendly and brought us over the wine list. Wines on the list seemed fairly priced with many choices in the $25 range.

We had just missed the Happy Hour which ended at 6:30 so next time we will have to come in a bit earlier.

I had the lamb shank which was almost too big and my husband had the chicken pasta with plums. Both items were really good and the pasta, even though I thought sounded rather odd came out tasting really good.

I deliberated even having dessert especially after the lamb shank, but we decided on the orange layer cake and it was sooo good.

I have to say, that's what I love about Portland, you can always find charming and new places in areas you might not expect.

This one is just hidden on a side street.

Love it! – We have dined at quite a few Italian Restaurants but yet we always come back to il Piatto. Accomodating wait staff and a Chef who goes out of his way to make our evenings special.

The food is always fresh and good.

Last time I tried the Lasagna with roasted yams, goat cheese and chanterelle mushrooms.

Desserts are made in house, I recommend the tiramisu.

Good, wholesome, happy, filling, and just simply satisfying would be the only way to describe our dining experiences over the past years.

Terrible Experience – My family came here for our pre-holiday dinner. The food was overall satisfactory but not as good as our previous visit despite my husband and I ordering the exact same entrees. The wait time, however, was unacceptable. We were at the restaurant 2.5 hours and despite being the very first table seated in the restaurant, we saw multiple tables leave before we even had our entrees. After we were done with our entrees, we waited 30 minutes with empty drinks/waters without being checked on by our server. After asking three times for our bill to arrive from other staff, I asked to speak to the manager. The owner was not very receptive to hearing what I had to say about the service and didn't help us out in any way.

To top it all off, two out of the six people in my party experienced food poisoning (beware the prawns). Could not have been a worse experience.

Won't be back – We looked forward to going, but didn't expect what we got. The food was fine, but the hour and a half wait for it was not. The owner/chef said yep, he decides what meals get prepared when so yes, he choses to have us sit and wait that long. Friends who are familiar with the place say they noticed a drastic decline in service. Maybe a change in ownership?

The food was okay, but the experience certainly left a bad taste in our mouths.

Never again... – Having lapsed the expiration date on the Groupon, I called Il Piatto today, one day post-expiration, to see if they would continue to accept the promotion for any longer. [In my experience with Groupon promotions, most businesses do extend the service as a 'good business practice'---myself included when my business did a Groupon promotion.]

Not only would they not extend the promotion on their own, but they offered a measly $11 credit for it. Why not just say "no, you no longer accept the promotion".

I was utterly shocked to hear of this $11 credit for the Groupon---the same $11 that they were paid (it's a 50/50 split with the Groupon company for those who didn't know).

When told that most businesses in the past have extended their offers, I was fed the "That's the only thing we are able to do right now" line.

Having had some subpar dining experiences there in the past, and after wanting to give it another chance through this promotion, I'm sorry to say that there is simply too many MUCH better options for my business in this town. Not to mention much better service and consumer etiquette. The bad service continues with this place....Il're dead to me.

What Happened? – This used to be one of my fave places.....I've been going there for 10 years. It was always consistently yummy....I have recommended it many times. I think it's the end for this wonderful place. I went there on a Wednesday, and there was hardly anyone there, but the service was absolutely horrible. They were friendly enough, but very slow. Also, it pisses me off when they don't have the actual wine they show on the list. Both bottles I ordered they didn't have. You should have it if it's on your list. So I ordered the gnocchi with pesto. I've had it there before, it's usually light, like little pillows, and the pesto is perfect and creamy. This was terrible, the pesto was dark and too garlicy, and there was no cream and big chunks (and too many) fatty pieces of pancetta. I can't believe I ordered desert. I must have been drunk by then. I won't even talk about how bad the desert was. Yikes. But in the end, my fault because I didn't have some guts and tell them or send it back. So I get what I deserve I guess. I am in shock how bad it was. It was actually gross. So long Il Piatto.

Satisfied – A perfectly pleasant early autumn night and the right kind of weather for hearty Italian. That is exactly what we dined on a recent night. Seasonal fare, simply presented with a wonderful balance of flavor.

We started with a house cured meat plate that came with some pickled vegetables.

The pumkin ravioli were delicious, creamy with cinnamon and the gnocchi with bacon and parsley pesto.

With barely any room to spare we felt compelled to try the tiramisu. The coffee and rum dripping from each bite as we devoured the boozey goodness with big smilles on our faces.

Thanks, we will be visiting again.

Oh so Good! – We arrived a bit late and were seated promptly at a lovely side table set in curtains. The dining room is very romantic with candles flickering at each of the tables. Our Italian waiter told us the specials of the evening which is what we wound up ordering they sounded so good. We started off by sharing the pasta special which that evening was gnocchi with bacon and parsley pesto. It was really quite simple and I'm not usually a bacon eater but this was good. Then we split a grilled salmon with pear salsa. It came served with grilled vegetables and potatoes.

In between our waiter told us stories about Italy which intrigued us even more.

Finally when it came around to dessert we felt drawn to the tiramisu which was absolutely devine. Coffee and rum soaked goodness. We actually fought for who would have the last bite it was so good.

Well I know where I will be going back to when I want a really good meal.

Hidden Italian Find – Having ridden our bikes past this small restaurant for years we always wanted to try it. We finally did, and now that we tried it we know we will be back.

How beautiful was it on one of our few warm summer nights when we dined al fresco on their sidewalk seating amongst potted plants with a lovely bottle of Sangiovese at the table.

It did'nt hurt that my lovely wife whom I addore was with me.

The food was amazing from our arulgula salad with pancetta and warm balsamic dressing to the flank steak with potato croquettes. In true Italian style we shared a Gelato for dessert.

Our Italian waiter coached us on our flawed high school Italian and now we really want to travel to Italy again.
