Consistently the best pasta in the hood and still some if the best in town. That's If you can stop eating the white bean spread n bread.
This neighborhood favorite just keeps on going, serving consistently good Italian food to loyal regulars and a stylish older crowd that seems worlds away from the rest of the carefree Hawthorne rabble. Go for happy hour, it's one of the best, and it's all night Tue, Wed, Thu and Sunday. I always get the same thing--white bean spread, Bibb lettuce and bacon salad, penne with vodka and sausage, Manhattan.
I've eaten here many times, and the food and service is always consistently good. Great restaurant.
Making things from scratch is great and Three Doors Down does that but I'm not sure the flavors are there. Dishes were all just ok for me. They' re either too bland or over salted. Service is excellent and the space is warm and inviting.
This Used to be My Favorite Restaurant – My spouse and I used to frequent this restaurant on a regular basis, usually on Saturday. We decided to go on a Wednesday and were thoroughly disappointed. I ordered the flank steak with creamed spinach and my spouse had the pork sugo. The food was mediocre and later that evening I ended up with intestinal upset to the point I spent a lot of the early morning hours in the bathroom.
I don't think we'll be going back any time soon, which is sad because we really liked that place, but something has changed.
Great food, great drinks, great service!! – We went to TDD on a Wednesday night, were seated promptly and our waitress was great - attentive, polite, professional. We ordered the "New Old Fashioned" and it was simply the best bourbon drink I've had in a Portland restaraunt.
We enjoyed the fresh bread and white bean dip, both were replaced promptly when empty. For starters, we had a panko encrusted eggplant salad - perfectly cooked, great texture and grilled artichoke with aoili - again cooked perfectly and arrived at our table hot.
Our main courses were manicotti and a risotto with fresh corn and topped with fresh basil and cherry tomatoes. The manicotti was amazing, the risotto was simply perfect - complex taste, perfect texture and great presentation on both items. The quantity of both items was perfect if you are pretty hungry - I ate too much, but I could have eaten the risotto until I was sick - it was great. For dessert, we shared a lemon curd with fresh berries and whipped cream - again, complex, fairly delicate taste and texture just right.
So, two people, two starters, two entrees, one dessert, two cocktails, final tab $62.00. Super value, everything was absolutely great - we'll be back soon!
A bit disappointed – After a friend told me to give Three Doors Down Cafe a try. The Cafe has a diverse wine list of some good local and import labels. The server recommended a Saumur Champagny by the glass. My guest and I agreed to give that one a go. Our dinner choices included a nice mixed green salad, roast chicken and gnocchi. The food preparations were in keeping with the cost ; middle of the road. The wine however, at $16.00 per mid-sized glass was over valued and really put a downward cast on the rest of the experience. $72.00 for three shared appetizers and two glasses of ho-hum..... I will order somethings else next time I give it a try.
disappointed at best – Do not know where to start, i am not inot ambiance its portland just want good food and simple consistant dishes. I try most restaurants at least 3-4 times before writing them off list. The food here is simply ok nothing really memorable all things i can get most other places. I do not want ground breaking dishes its italian. But oh well i think the nail in the coffin is the rush to have dinner and then be pushed through it in less than an hour and twenty minutes is neck breaking for four+ courses. I can understand if not ordering more than an entree turn them but to have plates of food removced as we eat and then the next course dropped before silverware is replaced seems to fast even for staff to keep up. Makes an alright expierance go bad fast.
Hmmm. .do you want customers? – I just don't get this restaurant. The food is definitely good. However, they just don't get customer service. I called on a weekend night, per the instructions on the website, and the gentleman who answered the phone seemed mostly annoyed that i wanted to put my name on the list, and kept stressing that they wouldn't be able to seat us for at least 90 minutes. We felt super discouraged, as it they did not want us to come there.
I would write this off as one off, however, I had another odd odd experience there. I was with a friend and we were finishing our dessert when they asked us to leave our table to move to the bar as they wanted to give our table to a couple that were waiting. Umm, what? So so so odd.
Great Food – Great service, wine list and food. Good place to meet friends and catch up.
One Of Our Favorites!!! – I love this place. I like to take out of town visitors here to show them a perfect example of a great portland restaurant. The servers are always friendly and inviting without coming across as fake. I can say that I've tried most the dishes and could recommend pretty much everything so far.
i do have to wonder about the review bagging on the beet salad. its one of my favorites. if you need more beets, just ask. not every person on every kitchen staff in town knows how many beets will keep your obnoxious yuppie whining at bay.
Portland's Best! Deserves a Sixth Star – the recent "reviews" by ""Terriek," "Coffee Guy" and "Portlandnewbie" (no kidding!) makes one wonder what "coffee guy" slipped into their lattes before writing their obviously choreographed (and anonymous)reviews. i hope their angst over the beets didn't ruin the dinners they carefully chose not to comment upon. let's see, 82 exceptionally positive reviews compared to 3 motivated by a strange fascination with a beet salad.
i've spent my entire adult life in portland and have seen restaurants come and go. sorry "Terriek," but my wife and i have you beat (not "beet") when it comes to dining out. not every night, but close to it. and lunches, too, at some of our favorite haunts (serratto, cha, wildwood, nostrana, morton's). we also have our favorites in NYC, LA, SF, Vegas and elsewhere. i hate beets but i love and appreciate fine dining establishments. simply put, i have found none better than 3 Doors Down. it has become the standard by which i judge all other restaurants.
the reservation policy (none taken except for parties of 6 or more; check in and get your name on the list) is proof the phrase "good things are worth waiting for" is true. stop by most any popular portland restaurant on a friday or saturday night and expect to wait. my "wait tolerance" is low but has never, not once, been challenged at 3 Doors Down. i suspect the drinks from the bar have something to do with that; they are tasty, strong and creative.
i thought i would never find pasta dishes to replace those i loved at delphina's (now serrato), but i was wrong. the ever-changing pasta dishes at 3 Doors keep you guessing (and drooling), or you can opt for the long-standing favorite, the fra diavlo. that is, unless you've stuffed yourself with appetizers of bacon-wrapped scallops covered in a decadent peach sauce or already stuffed yourself with the bread and white bean dip.
as much as i could go on about the menu, wine list and signature desserts at 3 Doors (nothing better than their banana cream pie after a movie at the bagdad across the street), it is the service which makes this place stand out. you will find no harder working, pleasant and knowledgeable wait staff. they represent the best in what portland has to offer amongst restaurant professionals.
i'm a first-timer on CitySearch. wanted to check out a place we intend to try out tonight (Beast) and, out of curiosity, checked out the comments on my favorite place, 3 Doors. the nearly unanimous favorable comments did not surprise me, but the curiously organized ones i mentioned above are not only strangely out of place, but so far off the mark i couldn't resist responding. come to think of it, i'm glad i won't have to share the best kept secret in portland dining with these three. dave miller
