Great Sushi and Bento, Charming and Quirky Staff – I'm bemused by the negative reviews I see here, especially the ones which took perceived slights in service so personally.
I was not a big sushi fan until I ran into Toney's shop. I find Toney himself charming and ebullient - if a little hard to parse at times - and thanks to Toney's sushi I now no longer blush at eating things like avocado (which in just about any other setting you have to point a gun at me to eat).
If sushi isn't your style, then one of the bento meals WILL do the trick. My favorite is the "Katsu" bento, deep fried chicken with a sweet sauce on with just the merest bit of the spicy bite.
Me and my wife have been there repeatedly and have never had bad food, have never been made sick and have never been treated to anything but the sweetest and most affable ... if quirky ... staff (Toney's kind of off beat and Raye and Chloe are two of the most charming ladies we've ever met)
It's to be regretted if anyone had a bad experience there. The reviews certainly don't sound like the Toney Bento we've ever been to.
I'd recommend (and do) this place in a heartbeat to anyone who wants quick sushi or bento at good prices.
Made us ill – I mostly just like to write good reviews. This is my first negative review. Might have something to do with the fact that me and my wife are both sick after getting to-go food from Toney Bento. I have not thrown up in 23 years. I didn't enjoy doing so again, nor the diarrhea. The food was not even good, it was mediocre.
Great Bento – I don't know what all the drama is about. This is a great restaurant! My husband and I get Bento to go ALL the time. Great Tofu, great service, very happy and prompt service, hot food, you name it. Love the environment as well. It is a Bento restaurant first and foremost, the Sushi is good but maybe not the best in Portland if you are into that level of detail. We get the chicken or tofu Bento with yakisoba, never had a bad experience. Give it a shot!
Toney Bento? Forget It! – My experience in this joke of a restaurant has been negative four times out of four. This last time the wife dragged me in there I told her ?that?s it! This is the final time you?ll see me in this place.?
Toney may be the guy behind the counter whipping up the chow, but he considers you ?n me just some people there for his amusement.
For the 4th time I had to ask the gal behind the register for a wet rag so I could wipe the dead food off our table. She gave me one of those deer-in-the-headlights looks like ?oh? The table is dirty? Should I actually care??
As we ordered, Marcia leans over and asks Toney ?could you prepare our orders so we are served at the same time?? (like this needs to be asked) Toney mumbles some Japanese accented English which basically said ?no.? He wasn?t kidding. 30 minutes after my shrimp bento arrived, Toney hadn?t even started on my wife?s Hawthorne Spot order. She got up and got her money back. She also saw someone else?s order had been ready 20 minutes, and the couple was still waiting for the waitress to walk the 15 feet to their table so they could actually eat it. They saw my wife get her money back, so they stood and insisted they get their food to go. The three girls at the table next to us got just one of their orders delivered. They told me about the other two orders ?we?ve been waiting about an hour.?
How this shining example of Hawthorne laziness and inept bungling remains open astonishes me.
Do not waste a penny of your hard earned money or a second of your valuable time in Toney Bento.
Fast Food Sushi – This is sushi fast food style. Just a notch above what you can find at any grocery store. If you are looking for high quality sushi, this is not it. I ordered the steamed vegetable pot-stickers they were okay, really tiny though. I had the super-vegi roll, dragon roll and tempura roll - all sounded much better than they tasted. On a good note, the place was quiet and the food was made quickly. I don't think I'll be going back though - I went in hungry for some good sushi and left disappointed.
Awesome Sushi – I'm not a big sushi fan, but their California Roll is addictive! Their specials are darn tasty too! I'm always wary of how restaurants serve their meat, Toney Bento has the tastiest Bar-B-Q chicken I've had outside of Texas! The service is great - the people behind the counter always have a smile and are a great help to customers not so skilled in sushi. The specials are a little expensive for lunch ($7) but they are much tastier and more filling than a $9 salad.
Pros: Fast, tasty, relatively inexpensive
Cons: 8 pieces of Cali Roll is not enough!
Sad to see so many bad reviews-- this place is better than everyone makes it sound – I always order the same couple things, so I may not be the best judge of the full menu, but I have never had a bad experience here. The udon noodles are very good, and so is the vegetarian curry bento (although it doesn't taste much like curry). Service has always been good, and usually very fast. I only wish the small cabbage salad was available as a regular side instead of just with the specials. Good beverage selection.
Pretty darn good – Not my favorite place for sushi but they have pretty good basic bento. The best thing is the spicy ramen soup bowl. Yes, it is ramen, but spicy and good.
Expensive cruddy sushi – I will first say that I haven't tried the Bento, which I've heard people rave about. But I have tried the sushi several times because the place is in my neighborhood. Every time it was awful. It didn't smell fresh and the cuts are terrible. Atmosphere is grubby, including flies buzzing around the bucket of stale fortune cookies. And service is okay, but I resent the dozens of signs telling me to bus my own table. They charge high prices, but expect you to stand in line to order your food, get your own drinks AND bus your own table? And why am I tipping?
Perhaps this place is okay for simple take-out... but don't dine in for sushi. YUCK!
sushi? – sushi should never taste like this...and the owner on hawthorne is not friendly or cute, he's nuts.
