While the top two floors will have everything you need brand new, check out the bargain basement for used gear. Some products have seen better days, and others are worth the digging.
Three large floors, stocking equip for everything from camping to disc golf + an incredible used section. Hiking trips & kayaking classes too.
Great people – My girlfriend and I went on the ross island kayak tour and had a great time. The instructors were friendly and knowledgeable. It made for a fun afternoon on the water and look forward to doing it again
Great shop, high prices – Just moved to Portland and some friends said I should check next adventure out. It was a really cool place with a lot of stuff. They have an awesome basement with used stuuff to. Many unique items I couldnt find anywhere else. The only issue I could see was the really high prices on new items. I understand because the store is unique, but don't go unless you can spend $$. If you can, you can find almost anything you need for the outdoors here.
Amazing store, amazing deals. – Huge selection of most everything they carry, including many different brand/pricing options. My wife just got a $300 snowboard for half that price, and I got an old (2002-ish) but UNUSED pair of Rossignol skis for $30! (Yes, that says THIRTY DOLLARS.)
You can't expect the staff to know every single thing about every single item, but they won't waffle--if they don't know the answer to your question they will refer you to someone who does or be honest about what they don't know.
I buy disc golf here almost exclusively--its a touch pricier than other places, but the people who help me obviously know a lot about disc golf and help me land on the right gear every time.
Yes, the store is "cluttered", but so what? I see that clutter as MORE STUFF TO CHOOSE FROM.
Get there first for your outdoor gear, and don't forget the bargain basement! You might find $30 skis!
Try another company for a kayak tour.. – I bought a groupon to go on the Ross Island Tour. They sold way too many and can't handle the business. I called four times to try and schedule something. They gave me one choice of one work night - which might work. NO apology, not friendly, not wanting to help me figure this out. Like it or lump it. I will NEVER shop here or set foot in the store. It's not that they couldn't help me it was the way they treated me. Jena was completely not helpful and gave me the run around. She basically told me week nights were available but then when I called back to book there was only ONE weeknight. She is really bad at reservations and really not a people person. Patricia was sweet and helpful. There are lots of kayaking business in Portland do yourself a favor and try one of the other ones. They gotta be more professional than these guys.
Great store for quality information! – Went there today to look for a sleeping bag and tent. The staff was super friendly and extremely helpful. Attentive to our needs and price range. Thanks Next Adventure, Team Madison Girls!!!
unorganized chaos. – After hearing several recommendations about the snowboard gear at Next Adventure, I decided to make a trip there to check it out. To begin, not a single employee offered to help me find my way through the unorganized madness. Secondly, the snowboard selection was not impressive and was displayed in a chaotic pile leaving me very little desire to search through the equipment. Most of it looked like junk anyways, so I didn't waste my time. Don't waste your time here either.
Helpful staff, good deals – I am not a hard core outdoor person so it helps to go to a place where the staff is willing to take the time educating the customers in a friendly, down to earth way. I have gone in several times (for snowboard gear, backpacking gear) and each the staff is very nice and patient with my dumb questions and doesn't condescend. I don't know the going rate for the items I bought but it seems far reasonable than the exorbant prices I've seen at Outdoor store and REI. Joes is cheap, but good luck finding anyone to help you.
They may not have every brand you're looking for, but I think it's a fun, friendly store to go to.
Competitive pricing and huge inventory make this sporting goods store a fave for adventurers in the know. – In Short
This sporting goods store carries both new and used equipment for every imaginable outdoor activity. In particular, there's a huge selection of backpacks and tents, as well as everything for skiers and snowboarders. Because it concentrates on buying closeouts, the store undersells most of its competitors. Shoppers willing to purchase slightly older merchandise can probably find a deal.
Best outdoor shop in Portland – This shop has all the top brands, the reviewer below should check his/her product knowledge. The best camping gear, ski gear etc is all there. The staff are all helpful and polite, it seems to be a happy shop unlike others. Have a friendly talk with the staff and they will get you the best deal they can and spend as much time as it takes to give you the right gear for your trip. You can't ask for more than that.
Great ski selection – After checking out REI and a couple of other local specialty ski shops, I finally decided to check out Next Adventure. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the huge inventory of skis, truly amazing. They have a large quantity of new skis and a lot of used skis as well. Compared to the other shops I visited, their selection was by far the best. And their prices are great. Their ski packages give you a lot of boot/ski options; you have the freedom to choose whatever youd like. And the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and willing to take the time to help you. I learned more from them than I did from all the research I did online. And they were able to mount my bindings in a half hour. Overall my shopping experience was great!
