Good selection, rude service – This store has their little dogs running around loose and they snapped at my dog, who did nothing. I found the owner to be rude.
They recommended a food that had chicken fat in it, when I asked for a chicken free food. I should have read the label, but the food was called Fish and Potato, so I made a bad assumption! Chicken is in so many foods.
My dog vomited as soon as she ate the food. When I brought it back, they argued with me that chicken fat does not cause problems and were very rude. But for my dog, it does.
I like their large selection, but who wants bad advice and to get yelled at?
Good People!! – I have been going to Portland Pet Supply for years and find that their wide selection of high quality brands have the best prices in town.....and everyone that works there is super friendly and helpful.
Today they went above and beyond by helping donate samples to a local rescue that is in need of supplies!!
If you want to get great value for your money and support a great local business...Look no further then Portland Pet Supply!!
Worst service – The store "forgot" a special order I placed for food my dog needs; he can eat nothing else. I relied on the owner to order the food, and he treated the incident as nothing special. These people are nasty, rude to their own staff, and living in some dream world where customers' needs don't matter. All they care about is $$$, not you or your pet.
N/A – Review deleted.
(Sorry, meant to tag Western Pet Supply.)
Frequently out of some brands of food – I was disappointed that they are frequently out of the brand of food that I buy. It has happened three times and after driving across town, the owner was rude. I didn't think I needed to call to confirm that the food is on the shelf.
Nice store but they charge money for the free samples! – Free samples are $.50 each! This store has a large selection, friendly staff and live chickens! My dogs enjoy coming inside and meeting everyone. I shop here though I don't agree on charging money for something that's intended by the companies to be free.
Complaint – I really liked this place until i started finding fruit flies in my guinea pig food. After i tracked the problem to the food (you could see the larve in there) I went back three more times, because each time they said it would be different next time, but nothing changed. I guess you get what you pay for.
Great customer service – We have been going to Portland Pet Supply for many years, including when they were a pharmacy (they were the best pharmacy in town as well!). They are extremely friendly and kind. Nina (sp?), the owner, has a steel trap memory and will remember your name, your pet's name what you usualy buy. She's amazing. Her children often work there, especially in the summer and they are as pleasant, friendly and customer-service focused as their mom. Her husband also works there on occasion, and the other employees are long-term people as well. Going into the store is like visiting your family.
All that aside, they also have a great selection, including the higher end foods like Innova that you can't find anywhere else. They have all kinds of toys and the selection is for cats as well as dogs. I read on another post that parking can be an issue, but in more than 10 years going here, I've never had to park farther than just around the corner. And if your hands are full, they'll gladly help you carry your purchase out. This is the kind of store where the 'shop local' edict really works and people and businesses like this should be supported.
Great selection, helpful staff – I've lived in Portland all my life and I just recently found this little gem. I needed rabbit food and bedding and they had a great selection. I was helped by a young miss Georgia and she was very knowledgeable and helpful. If she hasn't had a raise in a while I'd say she's due. I'll be returning to PPS for many future purchases.
Wonderful pet store – I wandered into this pet store one day while waiting for a different engagement on Hawthorne and I am so glad that I did. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the selection is wonderful, Most places have only the basics for cats and devote the majority of their inventory to dogs, but Portland Pet has a full range of toys and food for all animals -- hey, dogs aren't man's only best friend! During the recent pet food scare, the staff very patiently answered my questions, though I'm sure they were getting the same ones a hundred times a day. They even let me exchange some unopened cans of cat food when it turned out that my guys didn't like the flavors. Smaller than the the big pet chains but with an even better selction, I'd recommend Portland Pet Supply to anyone with a furry or feathered compatrior.
