Great Chinese at a very reasonable price. – I've been looking for a reasonably priced, high quality Chinese restaurant for a long time, and this one is the closest I've yet found in SE Portland. While the ambience is nothing special, the food is consistently good, and the quantity is better than most. This is especially true of the seafood, where for under $10 one gets a container that is larger than standard (rounded out) and full to the brim, with nice big pieces. The walnut prawns are one of my favorites and particularly delectable. The wonton wrappers in the wor wonton soup are slightly thick, but the amount of quality ingredients is amazing. Almost no room for broth. I'm now a happy regular.
The real deal. – Though this restaurant is in an iffy stretch of 81st Avenue, and there was an empty 40 and a discarded thong in the parking lot, our doubts proved unfounded. The service was quick, attentive, and not overbearing; the server spoke American English, though he wrote the check in Chinese. The spring rolls were fat, crispy, and stuffed full of crispy vegetables and savory meat. The wor wonton soup was nice, though the stock was not the best I've had. The chicken black bean sauce in clay was savory and rich, the pepper salt squid was perhaps a tad overcooked, but a good iteration of a dish I use to gauge a Chinese kitchen.
The menu includes several unusual items, such as deep-fried quail. The other people in the dining room were all Cantonese speakers, while other white folks came in for take-out orders. The Rule of Inverse Chinese Restaurant Decor applies once again: the less decoration, the better the food. This place is sparse, but the food is authentic and well-presented. When the check came, I was sure there was a mistake: two of us ate quite well for less than $21. Check it out.
Cheap Chinese if you not too picky – No Ambience, hole in the wall restaurant
Food is cheap ($5-7/dish)
Fried Calamari undercooked
Try their $5 specials on their dry erase board.
Beats cooking at home, $5-6 dishes hard to beat if you not picky on quality.
Good fried rice – Good food here and I usually am not too fond of chinese food. The building is old and should be remodeled but the food is still good. I would reccomend to go.
Amazing value, Excellent Food – Ah Fong rocks! Here the food is always hot and fresh, and I've been eating here roughly 2 to 3 times a month for the past 3 years! They always used whole white meat chicken, seafood tastes fresh not frozen, the beef is tender and delicious. The Egg Fu Yung is awesome! Their portions are huge! For $4.50 you get a staggering plate full of heaping portions of hot yummy food!
They have a HUGE menu -- including a large selection of vegitarian dishes. Daily specials, family combo dinners that scale up for the number of people you are feeding.
NOTE: They have recently remodeled their dining room. More seating is now available and the look and feel of the place has improved. This restaurant isn't going to give you a fancy shamncy feel - it's going to give you a quiet friendly comfy feel.
Extremely GOOD!!! – Unlike one of the other reviewers who has eaten at Ah Fong once I honestly eat there 2 to 3 times a week. Their General Tso's chicken is the best of any place i have been. They use all white meat chicken ofr the General Tso's. There orange chicken is also very good. Despite great food they have a wonderfule $4.50 lunch menu with over 20 combinations on it. If you're in the area you should definitely stop in. Oh and the service is way fast and friendly.
Squid to dive for!! – can not imgine ever finding anything as good as their salt and pepper squid.
It is squid flash fried in a spicey batter * like red pepper maybe * in a bed od sauteed onions. YOU will be hooked once you try it!! Kids are very accomodated the staff is very friendly, I really enjoy going PLUS they have delivery!! Prices are unbeatable!!
