Tryon Creek State Park

Known for the snow white Trillium flowers that dot the forest floor in spring, this pristine park is a popular hiking destination just minutes from anywhere in town. Go early, parking spots fill up fast. They often host fun events and guided hikes too, check the website for dates.

Noisy Chainsaws and Falling Trees – This park is a good, easy walk with a few steep hills. Great for beginning hikers. Beautiful plants and trees of all kinds. Great when they are left standing. Muddy during the winter.

One thing I noticed hiking today was that there were chainsaw sounds which made for a less-than peaceful setting. As I walked to the parking lot, following the sound of the chainsaw a beautiful, tall, healthy tree crashed down through the forest. We heard multiple trees fall while we were there in a short hour's time. That is just one of the accounts. As we left the forest with tears in our eyes the chainsaw started up again.

A close-in park that makes you feel like you're way out. – In Short
Tucked away in the hills, this 645-acre gem is a hiker's escape from the city without leaving the metro area. It has eight miles of trails for those on foot and three miles of trails for horses and bicycles; stop at the Visitor's Center for a quick primer on the park's flora and fauna and a map to help you pick your route. The second-growth forest boasts a bevy of wildflowers in the spring, and Tryon Creek is one of the only streams in the metro area to host a steelhead run.

Beats the pants off Forest Park – I didn't even know this park existed till a few months ago. Now I'm there 2-3 times a month. It's conviently located to just about any where in the city (near Lewis & Clark), but lets you feel like your in the middle of nowhere.
