I knew I'd be in the area this weekend so I'd read the reviews and was nervous about going. But man were some of those reviews crazy! The burgers were amazing. The burgers were really affordable. The atmosphere was cozy and fun. Very nostalgic and full of memorabilia. The staff was fun and on top of things. They had more shake flavors than I had ever seen anywhere. I'll definitely be going back a lot this summer for the cruise-ins. It's really out of our way but really worth the trip. It was packed with regulars so it can't be that bad or people wouldn't return. I think the competition just put up bad reviews to pull business away or something because I loved it.
americas best drive-in – well live in the area so far best burger s i have tried
if you dont like it take your ass to mcdonalds about 8 bloks away
Was great at one time. – The burgers are dry and the service is non existent. This restaurant is not the place I went to in 1968. I grew up in parkrose. My next door neighbors owned the Jim Dandy at that time. (The Barnett's) I wish they were still here today. The women behind the counter act like they're doing you a favor to take your order. It's not good anymore. Don't go here! This place sucks!
Jim Not So Dandy – I concur with the rudeness and indifference of most of the staff I have encountered here. And yes, they try to impose far too many condescending rules on their paying customers. Warning to any customer who dares have such disrespect for restaurant staff they should wear their sunglasses inside or answer a cell phone call anywhere in the vicinity of the counter. OMG! The horror!!!
Sure the food is usually decent and the history of the place intriguing but I personally would rather go back to catholic school to get that sort of abuse.
No Pooping On the Counter – The service absolutely sucks, but the food is great. I especially like that they have a Gardenburger on the menu for the vegetarian/health conscious crowd. Don't be fooled by the name "tater puffs". They're really just really tater tots--yet no less delicious despite the euphemism. The problem with this place is (as others have clearly experienced) is that the women at the counter are rude as hell. Not just one person--there are at least three that are completely unpleasant. It must be a requisite to work there, that you have to treat your customers poorly as if they're really bothering you. Don't expect a "thank you", a "have a nice day", or a smile at this place. You're lucky if you can get out the door with a burger and without permanent emotional damage or an ass kicking. Seriously--the food isn't THAT good that Jim Dandy's should expect repeat customers with the attitudes. They make Flo from Alice look like June Cleaver. And what's with all the "rules" posted all over? No hats, no sunglasses, no cell phones at the counter--the last one should be fairly obvious, no? It's like a sign stating "no pooping at the counter". Perhaps the staff forget that most people have common courtesy, even if they do not. If you can stomach the unpleasant staff, your stomach will thank you. For me, I'd rather not be abused while eating my tots.
Great Burgers – This is my first choice for a good burger. We don't often eat beef, let alone greasy burgers. But once in awhile we get the urge and this is our 'go-to' spot. They grill the bun; cook real bacon; cook the burger AFTER you order it (as opposed to 'holding' them in a steam table) and seem to know the exact ratio of toppings to burger. They satisfy the craving every time - we have never been disappointed.
On the down-side: there have been times when we felt like an inconvenience to the staff who seemed almost irritated to get a customer. That isn't the norm, but it has happened more than once.
The wait for the food to cook is not a source of irritation or frustration because they do cook the food to order - which is no longer a common practice at major burger joints. I'm happy to wait for my food to be prepared fresh - it makes a world of difference!
Get past the counter person and occasional bad attitude and give this place a try - the food will win you over!
Best Burgers In Portland! – I read the other reviews, Ive been to Jim Dandys dozens of times and Ive never had a bad experience. Ive met people who have been going there for 30 years, one guy drives from Seaside to eat there. Noone there give you fake 'kiss your ass' treatment but the service is still good and the food is the best Ive ever had! The Nomad is incredible. Seasoned fries are the only ones Ive ever liked, and I love them and the milk shakes are thick and amazingly delicious! I dont care what the negative reviews say, dont let them stop you from eating at this place. You will not regret it!
If you want explosive diarrea & rude service, this is the pl – We had the Jim Dandy burger & have never been so sick from anything edible in our lives. The mushrooms were not only canned but cooked in a ton of grease & the 'special sauce' tasted as tho it was spoiled. Our whole family was in the bathroom the rest of the weekend. When we called to let them know we were laughed at & told not to come back if we were so displeased--- no apologies, no questions, no attempt at making things right. We were upset at the way we were treated & the way this was handled. I discussed this experience with neighborhood friends who shared similar stories, one found hair in her patty melt, the other exasperated at being treated as tho she was putting out the employees by ordering. Everyone there seems to have the attitude that they are doing you a favor by talking to you & their actions speak volumes. It is too bad that they standards for both quality & service as low as you can go because this has the potential to be a cool place to eat. Save yourself the time, the money, & the Immodieum AD- skip Jim Dandy's!!!
Great Food Despite the Clerk – I work in the area and have eaten several times here. I hate it when the employees make you feel like they're doing you a favor by taking your order. It's really just one worker in particular. If the owner was smart they'd get rid of her. I'm guessing she's been there a very long time.
This place can be extremely slow in getting your food during their lunch rush but I still go because I really do love their burgers. Call in ahead of time it will help.
Rude! Rude! Rude! – Stopped by around lunch time with a friend. We stood at the register waiting to have our order taken. Mr friend looked down at the phone in his hand to see what time it was. The lady spun around and let out a sigh while rapping her pen on this little sign that red "no cell phones in line". The wall is covered in papers and writing so good luck noticing one small sign. My buddy put his phone away and the lady continued glare rudely at us. Then puts her hands on her hips and snaps a very rude and sharp "well?" MY friend looked at her strangely because she looked really mad and he already put his phone away. She then snaps an even ruder "Well are you gonna take your glasses of or not?". Written in small letters (In ink that had ran together making it almost impossible to read) was "please remove sun glasses". Again, good luck to anyone who thinks they will notice these small blotchy sign against a backdrop of news paper articles, menu info, and old pictures. This lady was so incredibly rude. We left and will never return EVER!!!!!!
