This bakery hearkens back to a time when women wore scarves on their heads, long distance phone calls cost extra, and folks dressed up to go the doctor. Take a number, wait to be called then stock up on cheap yet decadent sticky buns and cinnamon rolls.
Straight out of your greatest childhood memories (real or wishful), a visit to this storybook Broadway bakery is almost better than going to Grandma’s house. Go early, get a dozen donuts and eat them all in the car. I mean, take them to work and share them with your grateful colleagues.
Best Doughnuts in Portland! – I just picked up 6 dozen doughnuts for my staff and they went WILD for them. These are the best doughnets in Portland, hands down! No gimmicks, just GREAT doughnuts. Also, I am shocked to see the negative customer service reviews on here, since I've been going to Helen's for years, and the staff has always been great.
Terrible wedding service – DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! After doing a cake tasting with Helen Bernhard
Best Cakes but Customer Service So So – I ordered an anniversary cake from Helen’s. When I went to pick up my cake there was some sort of mix up and I had to come back 4 hours latter then scheduled to pick up the cake. This made my schedule for that day pretty hectic, but it was still doable. I picked up the cake latter and it was beautiful and delicious. I know that this is a simple mistake and it did end up working out but I thought since it was their mistake they should have offered some sort of concession. I asked for a discount but was refused. I love their cakes and so I will be back, but I wish they would be a little more customer friendly.
Avoid -- Terrible – We purchased a variety of items - cookies, cupcake, muffin, fritter, bread and petite four. They were all very bad.
I would never buy anything from this bakery again.
We relocated to PDX about 10 years ago and have not found any bakery here that begins to compare to even a moderately good bakery in Los Angeles.
Oh well, we a skinnier for not having a yummy bakery, but it is frustrating when one is hankering for a treat or has a special occassion.
Cakes in display case are not consistently fresh. – I fell in love with their cakes after having a piece of a co-worker's birthday carrot cake back in 2003. I loved their french cream frosting because it was't sweet like other cakes I've had so I started getting cakes there for any and all occasions. I even ordered by wedding cake from them in 2004 and the overall experience was good. A few months back, I got a cake from their display case for Mother's Day and that turned out okay (it was a white cake with french cream frosting). Last month, I got a chocolate cake from the display for a dinner and it was old and stale! I couldn't believe it because their cakes are usually so moist and delicious and for the price you pay, you just expect a lot more. I didn't try to take it back or anything but I'm going to avoid their chocolate cakes from now on. I will give their white cakes another try but if it's bad, I will probably find a new bakery. Their customer service is good.
DId an amazing job for a custom cake on short notice! – I had been looking for about a month for someplace local to get a custom cake for a shower, and originally didn't choose Helen Bernhard's due to all of the bad reviews on this website. When my chosen cake-maker cancelled on me less than 2 weeks before the shower, I decided to see if Helen Bernhard's was up to the challenge. I showed up without an appointment, and staff got me right in to look at pictures & take the description of the cake I wanted. The cake arrived on time on the day of the shower, and it was PERFECT! It came out so beautiful. All of the guests loved it and were standing around the table complimenting it. When it came time to eat it, no one was disappointed. So many people were asking "where is this cake from?" I am not the biggest cake fan myself, but even I loved the cake. Overall I had a great experience here and I hope that this review can counteract some of the negative ones below me.
Horrific!!!!! – Worst place ever!! My wife & I got our wedding cake here and when the caterer went to cut it open it feel apart and about 1/4 of our guess got a piece of cake, not including the people who got cake got it served to them with an ice cream scoop because there was no way to touch it without crumbling apart!! After the wedding we wrapped the cake up and took it back to Helen Bernhards were they said they would fix everything for us but a manager was not on site so to call back the next day. We called the next day and the manger said to bring in the cake, the only problem was we left the cake with them the day before and an employee tossed it out. So i had to make a second trip down there and take them photos, then they said they had to get owner approval from (Nick Name for Richard) to give me a refund. The next day I called D*ck and lets just say his name proceeds him! He was crud, non-understanding of the severity of the situation and would only give me 1/2 my money back even though I returned more then 1/2 the cake! I agreed to get it done and over with then he said they would mail me a check that day. Well its been over 2 weeks and no check so I called back and got the same response its in the mail. I live less then 4 miles away and its taken over 2 weeks? I am finally so fed up I plan to go to the media and get my self an attorney. DO NOT BUT FROM THIS BAKERY!!! THERE CAKES LOOK GOOD BUT DON'T BE FOOLED THEY WILL NOT BACK THERE PRODUCT. DON'T LET YOUR BRIDE CRY ON HER WEDDING DAY LIKE MINE, STAY AWAY FROM HELEN BERNHARDS!
Horrible cutomer service & more! – When my husband and I heard about HBB we were estatic. We had been having problems finding the right bakery.
When we went there for our consultation everything went so smoothly and better then i had expected..
We had reserved our cake 8 months before our wedding and up until 3 weeks before, we did not hear anything from them.
Then they called non stop 5 times a day asking the exact address of the wedding or Insisting that we better give them an address or they would cancel the cake on us.
See Our reception site Did not have a physical address, which i clearly informed them of at our consultation so i gave them the closest address to it, drove all the way out there to give them mapquest directions, and explain how there would be signs directing them there. But that was not good enough..
They were extremly rude and demanding and i had to o once again ( for the 3rd time ) drive out there and resolve it with the manager.
Finally when the day arrived, the delivery guy who was 45 mins late. Just dropped the cake off on a table without telling anyone, leaving it to melt in the sun on a 90 degree day.
I could not have been more dissapointed. I don't advise anyone to rely on them for your special day!!
Most incompetent staff imaginable – My fiance and I went in there today to sample cakes for our wedding. After rushing to make our appointment, the staff is utterly confused as to why we are there. They kept insisting for us to sit down when we were just looking around. Finally when someone comes to help, she has no idea how to move the process along; she just stared at us. After getting a clue, she offered us samples. My fiance and I went through the entire process, chose the cake, and were about to begin the purchasing process when she told us that our day was not available; we had already been there for about half an hour. Please realize that I had called earlier this week to make my appointment and the person I spoke to never said anything about my day being booked. What makes matters worse is the fact our wedding is on a Thursday. The bakery we ended up going to said there are never problems with weekday weddings. The person "helping" us really did not seem to care that she just waited half an hour of our busy Saturday morning.
I guess business is so good that they can refuse someone that is willing to pay $400 for a cake.
I will NEVER go there again and I will make sure to tell everyone I know not to go there. I am by far NOT a "bridezilla," but she really ticked me off.
Yummilicious – This is absolutely the place for any cake aficionado.
The best ( well at least for me) is white cake with white icing, simply yummilicious.
Delicious cakes and great customer service.
Easily the best place for cakes in PDX.
CAKES 1/2 OFF PRICE ON SUNDAY
