Best enchiladas! – Hands down, the best enchiladas i've ever had. And i love Mexican food and lived in TX, San Diego and Arizona. I've yet to find anyone who can match the shredded beef enchiladas--to die for.
35th Anniversary...and counting! – Los Baez will be celebrating their 35th Anniversary on Oct 4, 2008.
I calculated that I've had over 30 years of homemade tortillas, guacamole, fabulous refried beans and flan! This is comfort food done right. They cook from authentic michoacan recipes with fresh ingredients every day. Fresh chips, fresh salsa, fresh guacamole, homemade tortillas, homemade sauce and gravy. Try the to-die-for chicken mole, or a tamale served with chunks of tender pork. YUM!
Grandma Baez makes the tortilla dough early every morning which is then shaped and baked on a griddle and served HOT with every meal. NOT TO BE MISSED- Note: Save carbs somewhere else!
We take large groups at lunch were the specials are only 4.95! Even if you add guacaomole & real brewed ice tea and you have an outstanding meal at an unbelievable price. If you come for dinner don't miss having a drink -- They make fabulous margueritas.
This is the original restaurant and I think, still the BEST. Tell Raul, Angel & Albert hi for me!
Extremely below average – For the people that have rated this restaurant well it is obvious that you do not know real Mexican food. The food at this place is inadequate.. I have eaten at places in Mexico and abroad but I must say in all of Salem this is perhaps the worst mexican resturant I have encountered. The service was some of the slowest I have experienced. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered a quesadilla as an appetizer and it arrived cold and unmelted. My girlfriend ordered a Beef taco that had chucks of beef in it so large she couldn't eat it. I ordered coffee and waited 20 minutes before I asked to have it refilled. Poor service and very low grade food. The one upside is their Chile Rellano. The C.R. was quite tasty and done in a jalisco style. Other than that the resturant is definitely not recommended. By the way they do not have cheddar in Mexico, that is an American thing....yuck. My grade would be a C-. Recommendations go to Los Dos Amigos or La Hacienda Real.
A Land Mark in Salem – As far as I am concerned Los Ba'ez is a land mark in the Salem area. I was fortunate that my parents took me there, before I moved to Oregon when I used to visit them. That introduction to the Ba'ez family spans over 30 years.
I will say from the initial visit to the original restaurant, you can guarantee everything from the consistent quality of Homemade Chips & Salsa, right through to the delicately prepared Flan Custard dessert, to top off a wonderful meal, is as certain, as the smiles you will receive from the Baez family members upon entering their casa. If there is one element to me," that stands out," it's the wonderful sauces which are so characteristic of the authentic Michoacan regional cooking style the Ba'ez family strives to maintain. Each dish has a specific sauce that wakens your taste buds and makes you go Mmmmm !!!!! That sound effect comes through with each and every one of the endless classic dishes. From the "Best Salsa in town," to the freshest "Home Made Tortillas," Re-fried Beans, Rice, Tacos, Chili Verde, Tamales, Enchiladas,Chile Rellenos, Chile Colorado, Steak Ranchero. The Chicken in Mole Sauce is to die for, and will leave you breathless with the subtle flavor of over 25 plus ingredients that go into this wonderful dish, not including the love!!!! ......I haven't mentioned any of the "Seafood Specialties." If you love fresh succulent Shrimp try any of the "Camarone Specialties" robust Mexican spices, fine white wine and served over a bed of rice, this will 'Rock Your Boat," to be sure. I cannot seem to get out of Los Ba'ez without trying one of my favorite "Special Dinner Combos," the whole enchilada as it were. The portions are more than ample and you will most likely take some home for mid-nite snacking (Sorry Fido). (get extra tortillas) Oh, and make sure you leave room for dessert...gotta try the Flan or the Sopapilla!!!
Isn't it about time you discovered (or re-discovered) the Bench Mark for Mexican food in Salem.
Great Mexican In Salem – Los Baez has been around for years, to where its recognized as one of the most long lived Mexican restaurants in the city. When coming here, one will find that the good sized portions, inexpensive prices, and great service are the reasons why. The food has been consistently good enough to permit multiple visits and the service has constantly amiable. Most will probably not fall in love with the decor, but most people don't come here for that but "la comida" instead.
Great Mexican Cuisine – I have been eating here for almost 30 years. Los Baez is the best Mexican restaurant in Salem by far. Their refried beans are the best I have ever eaten on either side of the border. Chips and Salsa are provided with every meal and I believe are made fresh on site. Service is prompt and freindly. Atmosphere is wonderful. I hardily recomend Los Baez!!! Mucho Gusto!
Deserts – I would highly recommend the deserts they are fantastic. Ask for Sophia's sundae or there's the sopapilla's they are made fresh to order by Raul. A family owned business with all the family participating in the preparation of fresh food daily even "Mama Baez" get's into the act by preparing the dough for the home made tortilla's bright and early every morning. It's the only place that we frequent each and every time we are traveling Oregon.
I've been going for years! – Los Baez has the freshest food around, handmade tortillas, salsa, and other sides are great. Each dish served will fill you up with good table side assistance for more chips, salsa, and drinks. If you like hot sizzling plates Los Baez is a good place to check out. The food is authentic and can't be found at your average everyday Mexican resturaunt.
