Its selection, spaciousness and service stand out from the rest of the South Side crowd. – The Scene
Right past the front door is a "reception area" showcasing a few of the more high-profile books. The shelves start just beyond and run the length of the store--they're eight or nine feet high, and a little unkempt from time to time, adding to the store's hardcore browsing atmosphere.
Book lovers of all ages and sorts: married couples looking for some premium before-bed reading as well as honors college kids looking for inexpensive copies of philosophical texts.
Before You Enter
Often Eljay's has a $1 cart (and sometimes it gives a few books away). Granted, the selections here aren't incredible, but they are often decent. Recent acquisitions include Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities," two books by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and a 19th-century book of humorous essays by Bill Nye (not the science guy).
