A classic traditional American eatery on Mt. Washington's "Restaurant row with a view." – The Scene
The downstairs, with two levels to allow all a view of the city, sits about 60, with a private room for 30-60 upstairs. There is a small bar, friendly and intimate, for waiting on busy evenings. A cool retro feature is that when you sit down to dinner, matchbooks with your name printed on the cover are placed at the table.
Appetizers include fresh oysters, and hard-to-find steak tartar, and delicious stuffed hot peppers. Main courses center around steaks, veal, and seafood with a signature dish of veal LaFayette, prepared with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, and black olives in a marsala wine sauce. The strip steak was also excellent with bread crumbs, garlic and herbs or green peppercorns, heavy cream, and brandy. Shrimp scampi, scallops provencial, lobster tail, and a catch-of-the-day round out the seafood menu.
Desserts include a moist carrot cake, and a Pittsburgh tradition: a nut-covered ball of ice cream (walnuts here) served with caramel, chocolate or butterscotch sauce.
