Authentic German cuisine – I found Max's to be the best German restaurant I've been to in the U.S. Having lived in Germany for 3 years, I was very pleased. It's also where the movers and shakers in Pittsburgh go to eat.

german shoe leather – the saurbratten should be called sour and rotten. Meat was dry and tough like an old german boot. had no dumplings on a Sat night?????

Horrible, horrible Food – I was really looking forward to having German Food - but what I was served at Max's was absolutely not German (it may not even be considered food). I am German - I should know what our food tastes like! At Max's the gravy tasted like it came right out of a package, the pancakes were not cooked all the way through, the meat was dry and nothing had a good taste to it. Don't go there if you are looking for food and you are hungry - the beer selection is good, so just have a couple of drinks and eat somewhere else.

A little piece of Deutschland on the North Side. – The Scene
Bouncing off the wooden booths and tile floor and over the din of the mid-evening supper crowd, the unmistakable sounds of Germany can be heard at Max's Allegheny Tavern. At first, it seems as if it's just a shadow of the North Side neighborhood's past, a place where German was the prominent language up to our involvement in World War I. But Max's has become something of a refuge for older locals wearing Tyrolean hats with swatches of billy goat gruff in the band and for workers from one of the dozens of German companies doing business in the Pittsburgh area.

Food and Drink
While Max's selection of beer from Bavaria and her sister states is nearly unequaled in the city, it is the exclusive pourer of Dutch Club and Dutch Club Dark--Dutch being the unfortunate Americanization of Deutsch. Their food is equally authentic, featuring Teutonic platters of wurst, hasenpfeffer and schnitzel as well as a Reuben sandwich made with potato pancakes.
