Great food, Hip Wine and Beer List, Funky Atmosphere – You have to go here. The food is tasty, the portions are generous, but best of all, the wine list is unusual and way off the beaten path. I can see whoever picks the wines actually thought about the menu, unlike so many places where all you get the typical shiraz, cabernet, and chardonnay. And you don't see any Budweisers or Coors in this place either. It's all about taste, not about what's the most popular. Whoever run this place really did their homework, and yeah, you can bring in your own for a pricey corkage fee, but I'd rather try something different for a change - a short well thought out menu and wine and beer list to go with it.
Great Pacific Rim food – Spice Island is one of my favorite lunch time Oakland restaurants. Wonderful tea menu (Thai tea is wonderful). Very good thai, indonesian, and Burmese food. Very quick and freindly service.
Decent food, very poor service – I was in town over the weekend for a visit, and ate at this restaurant at the advice of a friend. While the food was decent and inexpensive (nothing out of the ordinary for a pan-asian restaraunt), the service was lacking. It took our waitress almost ten minutes to get to us, and one of our orders was not at all as described on the menu. The check was slow to arrive, and while the ambiance was comfortable, it is not somewhere I would choose to return or recommend to a friend.
very poor service – i have eaten at spice island many, many, many times. the food had always been delicious even though the staff's attitude varied.
the last time i ordered from them was delivery for about six vegetarians at a meeting at university of pittsburgh. i ordered several dishes and i was sure to emphasize that everything was vegetarian. but the food we received was heavy on the chicken and beef!
i called them, a woman answered the phone, and i explained the situation. first i was told that we should pick the meat out. i told her that was not an option. then she said that i never specified vegetarian meals. but a whole room of people at my meeting heard otherwise. then she told me that they do not substitute vegetarian ingredients anymore. i asked why no one told me this when i ordered, which seemed like a reasonable question even though i could tell she was getting flustered. she said that she was too busy to argue with me and hung up the phone.
i think it is unfair that they took our money but failed to give us what we ordered. i did not abuse their employee in any way. i believe it is usually a bad idea to insult people that will have uncontrolled access to a meal you plan to eat. until she hung up on me i hoped they would just send us what we ordered.
so, yeah, we no longer eat there. i guess business is so good they do not care about a few customers.
best pan-asian on a budget – just came from Spice Island, my favorite pan-asian restaurant in Pgh, and again, it didn't disappoint... the Tea Leaf Salad is a must, tangy and garlicky with just a hint of the bitter tea leaves not offset by the sweetness of the dressing... I get it every time! Tonight's entree was the Mango Chicken (again... I think I've tried everything at this point) and it was yummy as usual. I will never go back to Chinese food again. And at these prices, it's affordable for a weekly culinary outing! Best time to go is when Univ. of Pitt. is NOT in session, which makes this small cozy restaurant less hectic, meaning a lesser wait time for seating and food delivery... During the school year it can be quite busy due to it's popularity. Go! Now! What are you waiting for??!! Just don't tell too many people, I don't want too long of a wait next week when I go again!
A Cut Above the Rest – This place is great. I'm visiting from NYC and friends of mine told me that I should go to this quarky little place. I was really impressed. The food, the hip, down-market atmosphere, a nice wine list, limited but well thought out. Overall, it's very different from a lot of restaurants in this area. The vibe just screams bohemian. Very cool.
Out of Towners Who Loved It – My wife and I came in from California for a memorial service. We used CitySearch to find a couple of places to eat. We stopped here for lunch and we were VERY pleased. I had the Chicken Panang- not like Penang Gai (red curry chicken in Thai rest.)- but delicious none-the-less! My wife had a vegitarian dish that she liked a lot. They have a huge tea selection, and the tea of the day was great- I don't drink tea much. The service was great. We love good food, and we've recommended this place to anyone who would listen!
A Gem of a Restaurant that Feels like Home – I was in Pittsburgh this week for work and went to this great little restaurant. Reminds me a lot of places in NYC. Great ambience, with different styles of chairs and some pretty funky vintage furniture. The food is fantastic, even better than a lot of the places I've been to in NYC. It also boasts a pretty impressive wine and beer list. The place was packed the night I went, and it's pretty small, so I wouldn't bring a huge group here.
POOR POOR POOR service – service was slow from the moment we walked in. we were standing and waiting awhile for a table when there was empty tables, and ignored. after being seated, we were again ignored when we were ready to order. others that came in after us were promptly seated and orders were taken before ours. FINALLY someone came to take our order.. long wait before we were given food. we werent given main dish plates, just the serving dishes. we asked for these, it was another wait. we weren't given drink refills. as we were finished, the wait staff was more concerned with wiping empty tables then getting us our bill. FINALLY someone came with our bill, ignored us again. flagging them down with the bill did NOT help. after writing "$0. Poor service!!" in tip area, we were charged $4 extra from the actual bill. I would NOT recommend this place!
Really good food at a decent price. – A great place for SE Asian food. Food is very fresh and authentically spiced. Usually the atmosphere is quite good (and inside of restaurant is nicely decorated and not over-done). Sadly, the head manager (owner?) is very cold and unfriendly with customers.
