Neither a used book dealer nor a large, nationwide chain--a rarity indeed..
The Scene
Jay's is small, and a bit more brightly lit than most local bookstores. It's an atmosphere that lends itself to a good amount of patron-owner dialogue: Feel free to ask any question that might come up.
Who's Buying
People trying to shun the big-name chain bookstores; a few more literary Pitt kids; customers who have been loyal to Jay's for decades.
Literary History
"Wonder Boys" scribe Michael Chabon worked at Jay's while studying at Pitt. The bookstore described in his first novel, "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh," may or may not be a fictional replica of the Bookstall--it all depends on who you talk to.
Don't Miss
For those who like their magazines pornographic, there's a pretty large collection for such a small bookstore.
