The point of "the Point." – The Scene
Fort Pitt was once one of the largest English strongholds in North America, and now they just have that big fountain there. But the memories aren't lost. You can learn all about it, the French and Indian War, Fort Duquesne (what it was before it was Fort Pitt) at the aptly named Fort Pitt Museum, which is located in a fine replica of an eighteenth century bastion (and no, that's not a bad word). According to their brochure, "The Fort Pitt Museum unfolds the saga of the bitter struggle between Britain and France for control of North America." One of the reasons this fort was so pivotal in history is that at the time, river travel was the fastest form of transportation, and how handy it must have been to have three rivers converging at one point. The museum has undergone some recent renovations, and the second floor exhibits won't be complete until sometime in 2002.
