Snobby Market-NO THANKS! – A few years ago I stumbled upon this quaint market in the heart of Shadyside. Being the foodie I am and will be soon starting my own catering business, I walked inside to check out what they had. Their produce was beautifully displayed along their windows, they carried champagne grapes and an array of unique items. I walked towards the meat counter and talked with the butcher. While asking him questions about his meats, he rudely ignored me to turn his attention to one of their "regular" patrons. Seeing this, I showed myself out of the store.
Over this last weekend, I needed some champagne grapes and although I remembered my incident at Shadyside Market years prior, I thought, "well, don't hold a grudge, go back in". I had a lot if running around to do this morning, so I stopped here first since they open at 8am. I grabbed a quick coffee and headed over to the market to find the doors were still LOCKED (it was 8:15am). I thought to myself, "maybe their hours changed?" I checked on the outside of the building and sure enough they opened at 8am. I knocked on the glass to find no one opening the door? I walked around towards the front of their buidling to find someone STOCKING PRODUCE! The lady gave me this look as if I were putting HER out telling ME TO WAIT! What in the world? The last time I checked, I am the patron coming to give business to YOUR store. I waited and waited, but she never opened the door?!
I walked back to my car and thought, "the nerve of some people thinking just because you own a "fancy, schmancy" grocery store that you're BETTER than me? Produce vendors in NYC/Philly/ elsewhere in Pittsburgh have NEVER treated me in such a way. I ended up stopping by my local Giant Eagle to find what else-champagne grapes after all! After that, I visited one of the local famers markets around the city and found local, farm fresh produce and warm, welcoming, smiling faces!
As a small business owner of a catering business, I will NEVER return to Shadyside Market and be treated in this manner and give them my hard earned $$. Their loss!
Bottom Line: If you want to feel like a snob, walk the streets of Shadyside and visit this store. If you want to support the local Pittsburgh economy and your local farms...AVOID THIS PLACE!
Im Impressed! But... – When I wandered into this pictureque store, I had no idea what I was in for.
Both beutiful and full of a great selection of items, and even something for picky little Eevee's like mine. The Market itself sells almost anything from Ragecandy bar's to Eon Mail.
However... The Deli sells something Im compleatley against. They sell Whole Farfetch'ds as well as Farfetch'd legs and breasts.
Cooking and eating Animals I can understand, but what kind of sick person would eat a Pokemon?
Other then this, very good.
Great service – Cahrming atmosphere and an excellent staff that is more than happy to help you with anything you need, even if it means recomending someplace else. The deli not only has an amazing selection of deli meats and unique salads but they also have entrees, made fresh everyday, incase you dont wan to make dinner. Thy also have a butcher who is happy to help with whatver you need. Highly recomended, you must try it!!
A fitting compliment to the Shadyside shopping scene. – The Scene
It's hard to miss the plump fruit in the window of the Shadyside Market. The fruit may draw you in, but the unique food selection is the larger draw. Organized in neat, narrow isles, the small market has a variety of typical name brands, some interesting variations of name brands, and a few items possibly never seen before. The market has a full scale deli as well, great to grab a quick lunch.
The market has standard fruit like apples, oranges and grapes, but there's also some not so ordinary fruit like israel mellons, asian pears and out of season berries. The maket has conventional items such as Eggo Waffles and name brand cereals, but the no-so-ordinary items include interesting cheese, organic bulgar wheat cereal and a complete line of Pepperidge Farm Soups, not just the cookies. The market has fresh fish daily, high quality steaks and a cooler with prepared Good Wives hors d'oeuvre.
