Not so great sushi.. – Well, I have been to this place several times with my boyfriend and it gets worse everytime we go, so we stopped going there.
First of all, the place is NOT for romantic dining.
The sushi is not that great.. Compared to other sushi places in town, this place is way to pricey for its quality. They do offer a lot of choices, but the quality is not that great.
Not worth it – Maybe I'm just a New York snob, but this was some of the worst sushi I've ever had. The fish was not cut well, it was too tough, the seaweed tasted funny and the rice wasn't right. I've had better sushi from the supermarket. Skip it and save up to splurge at someplace worthwhile.
Skip it – I love sushi and will tolerate minor variances, but this was not a place I would recommend. Focusing purely on food, I was very disappointed. Quality, freshness and presentation was mediocre. Kelp was almost inedible, rice was dryish and fish felt limp. Unagi roll was breaking up and the sauce was too thin. Miso soup tasted soapy. Greeter was pleasant; I was seated and served promptly; and the waiter was efficient.
Positve Rating – I do not agree with the 2 negative reviews-I have dined at this site for over 7 seven years and always found the food to be good to very good. It not too pretenious, and definitly not shabby either, with good services and helpful friendly owners on site. Not cheap but not expensive. And, I've dining at similar restaurants all over Japan, the U S Caribbean and Spain. But, be sure to instruct the server on the progession you wish the food to arrive in, as often all the various dishes come at one time
Rock with a South Side roll and chicken asparagus maki. – The Scene
The room is light and clean, exuding an air of comfort. There is a small bar on the right, with some outstanding sake and Japanese beer choices. A small sushi bar to the left leads to two dining areas, with tile floors and small tables. Soft, warm colors abound. Servers are dressed in blue and white outfits, and do their job very well.
There are numerous sushi specicialties, including a Pittsburgh and South Side roll. Combination platters abound for the novice or you can pick and choose from sushi and makzushi (rolls). While the sushi is good, the place is appealing because those who don't like raw fish have many other options. The gyoza (pan-fried beef dumplings) and the chicken asparagus maki (asparagus and carrot wrapped in white meat of chicken, broiled and served with teriyaki sauce) are outstanding appetizers, served in generous portions. Tempuras (fried foods) are light and crispy, the vegetables and shrimp are the standouts here. Anything with eggplant should be tried.
Yukky Tuna Tataki – We're new to Pittsburgh and Sushi Too was described to us as "decent" and "less expensive than Umi." Decided to try it, and were pretty disappointed. While the server was very friendly, the sushi overall was bland. We were excited to see one of our favorite appetizers, Tuna Tataki, and decided to use it as our gauge. First, it came at the end of the meal. Worse, it was not a superior cut, and was essentially "marbled," with whitish-yellow streaks throughout. Not the melt-in-your mouth tataki we're used to. We couldn't even finish it--took only one bite apiece. Whole meal was overpriced--and we're more than willing/used to spending $60-70 in Baltimore for good sushi!
"Shady Sushi, Too" something suspicious – Wow! Sushi mediocre at best. Certainly overpriced. Atmosphere, alittle bland. Sushi "chef" was very rude. I grew up on sushi, and I have to say, this was overall, the poorest quality I had ever experienced. Charged $9.95 for 1 handroll! Very shady, indeed.
