In response to Dan R.'s review. . .

Dan,

I’m so glad that you and I had a chance to speak about your experience with us here at Good Hope Animal Hospital. Obviously, you felt frustrated – enough so that you wrote this review without delay; well before you and I had an opportunity to talk and straighten things out. But I do understand. We all have moments when we just need to be heard. While I regret that we hadn’t spoken before you wrote your review, I am satisfied knowing that we’ve addressed your concerns.

As we are a full service medical and surgical facility, we handle emergency situations when they arise. Unfortunately, that means that we have to occasionally inconvenience our other clients. Although this doesn’t happen very often (we work hard to prevent it), it did happen during the evening you came in for your visit with us. As you pointed out, that event resulted in a delay for some of our appointments that evening, including yours. I do apologize for this. If you had happened to come in at any other time, I can assure you that you would have had a very different experience. Normally our doctors run on time and clients only wait in the reception area for a few minutes. Nonetheless, I’m sorry for the way things worked out.

I’m also pleased that we had an opportunity to discuss your concerns over our fees. Aside from being upfront about our regular exam fee (which is competitive with exam fees charged by other veterinary clinics in the area), we do strive to give our clients treatment and medication options whenever possible. And we try to make sure that our clients understand the costs of those options. Ultimately, our goal is to give our patients the very best care we can give them, while also considering the needs (financial or otherwise) of our clients. It can be a balancing act at times, but we always try to collaborate with our clients to find solutions that are most suitable for them as well as their pets.

I’m proud, too, of the fact that our fees are pretty well middle-of-the-road. We couldn’t afford to hire and keep the best vets and support staff, or purchase and maintain the latest equipment if we charged the least. On the other hand, we want to keep our services as affordable as possible, so we don’t charge premium prices either. So, instead of taking a position on one end of the price spectrum or the other, our goal has always been to provide the best overall value. Naturally, this approach means we won’t be a perfect fit for everybody.

Once again, I’d like to reiterate that I’m sorry you were less than satisfied with your visit. I’m happy we had a chance to talk about it, and whether or not you choose to see us again, I sincerely wish you the best.

My wife and I have been taking our Shetland sheepdog, Molly, to Good Hope Animal Hospital for a few years now. I've had so many good experiences there, that I've decided to stop procrastinating and just sit down and write this review.

There are a lot of little things I like, of course. They're ultra-convenient, they can usually get me in pretty quickly when I need to, and I normally don't have much of a wait, if any. Though, I'm not too bothered if I have to wait a few minutes, because I've come to realize that they do have emergencies to attend to from time to time. (It happens, and it's understandable. It's a medical facility, after all, not a fast-food restaurant.)

I also like that the technicians and our vet (Dr. Heidecker) take time to address my questions and concerns. And they think ahead, too. They've given me a lot of advice on preventive care so that Molly lives a happier, longer life. I appreciate that they give me tips to prevent problems, even though it means I probably won't have a need to visit them as often. And I suppose that right there says it all. They're obviously more concerned with the health of my dog than they are the health of their bottom line. Even when it comes to treatments or procedures, they've always explained my options and given me choices. I've never felt like anything was being pushed on me.

And speaking of the bottom line, if you're reading this, you might also be interested in their pricing. I've used other vet practices in the past, and what I've seen is that Good Hope is not the cheapest place, nor is it the most expensive. They're somewhere in the middle, which I think is just right. I worry when a business doesn't charge enough - I worry that I'm getting inferior service. (As they say, you get what you pay for.) But naturally, I don't like paying the most either. So, I've found a good balance with Good Hope. But truth be told, I'd still take Molly there even if they were the most expensive. Our dog is part of our family, and the care she gets there is well worth any price.

There are many other positive things I can say, too, but I don't want to write a book here. Overall, I'd say that if you're looking for quality care at a reasonable price, and if you appreciate warm, down-to-earth people who will treat you and your pet exceptionally well, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better vet practice than Good Hope. I recommend them to everyone I know!

I have been a customer of Good Hope Animal Clinic, now Good Hope Animal Hospital for 20 years. The staff has always been nice even when they are extremely busy, which is most of the time. The staff is very knowledgeable. I have seen all the vets there but my favorite vet is Dr. Heidecker. He is straight forward with what he thinks is going on with my pets.

I have had a lot of pets because I also have an animal rescue. Good Hope Animal Hospital has also done their part with the rescue community. They have several rescue groups as clients at the hospital as well as they participate at the event at City Island for the dog rescue groups. I have tried other vets until I found Good Hope. The prices were higher, the staff was rude and I was not comfortable with the vets. After all, to most of us, our pets are our babies.

Good Hope Animal Hospital is a clean facility, even the bathroom is clean. It never has any type of pet odor when you walk in or when you are in the examine room. And yes, sometimes they are behind. They may have a life threatening emergency come it. That is a priority above all else. Or what the person came in for turns out to be more involved than a 15 minute visit. That happens sometimes at my own doctors. But it is nice to know that if that was my baby in there at that time, the staff is doing everything they can do to say his life.

I have referred friends, people that have adopted from me and I have had nothing but good feed back. So having said all of that, I would highly recommend Good Hope Animal Hospital! I love them!

Be prepared................to wait. Don't expect to be seen at your appointment time. Don't even expect to be seen within 30 minutes of your appointment time. Don't expect the vet to spend more than a few minutes with you before rushing on. They are always behind. Don't expect to be told how much services or medication will cost. Expect expensive surprises at checkout. Don't expect there to be anything that comes close to management or even decent customer service.

I had an issue with how much something was going to cost because the vet that saw my pet never told me. There was no office manager available, no one cared, the owner was there and refused to talk to me because...........you guessed it, he's one of the vets and he was 3 appointments behind. Expect that they will recommend surgery or other expensive options. These people only care about their bottom line. They have no understanding of what customer service is. If you voice your opinion or ask to speak with anyone, prepare to be called difficult and get an attitude from the office staff. I would recommend anyone that doesn't want to overpay or spend a lot of time waiting steer clear of this place.
