Buyer beware – I'd been going here for years for simple fixes with no trouble. That changed when I brought in a taupe-colored leather pair of designer shoes that had few water stains. I was told no guarantee they could get the stains out. When I picked up the shoes, rather than remove the stains, they had restained the entire shoe 10 shades darker to hide the stain. When I complained they told me, "no guarantee."
All My Shoes See Anthony's Before They Die – I am shocked by the former reviews criticizing this landmark shoe repair. I have been a patron at this establishment since college and have been faithfully travelling the distance from Napa, Petaluma and the East Bay to have Gino and his staff repair my hard earned Gucci, Prada, J. Finestrier, Fiorenti Barker, Alden, etc... The shop is in hard-worn vintage condition and in need of a re-sole itself; however, they are the only game downtown or in town for that matter, worth your time or money. All of the major shoe stores and specialty stores use them to do thier "in-house" repairs. Why would anyone not take reccomendations from Saks, Gucci, NM, et all??? The pay first is due ,as I was told many years ago, to the lack of timeley customer pick-up. Therefore, creating an enormous backup of repaired, yet unpaid shoes. Negligient customers have created this policy, not the owners. It is the responsibility of the customer to ask for what they want and need before paying. If customers act responsibly, then most will be satisfied by their use of premium materials and expert crafsmanship. Ask for what you want and you will recieve it in full. The servive desk representatives are educated and their attidudes and demeanor are more on par with a popular Manhattan shoe repair, not a toouchy feely take forever to hold your hand over a pair of heels that need new taps. So embrace their "city" quickness and authority, you will get an education and a well-soled pair of shoes with a Chrystler Building shine.
Anthony's Shoe Service – Anthony's is by far the most expensive shoe repair location...and the quality of repair can vary. Moreover, the owners are quite arrogant and rude. They can do exceptional, although excellent work, but you need to know as much or more about shoe repair than the owners. Generally, they do not take a good look at the shoe they are repairing. They sign you up for the quick repair which is often done with low quality materials. Once you get the shoe back, the repair may not last more than a week at which point, not only will you need to do the work again, but most likely the shoe required additional work that these knowledgeable people did not bother mentioning or suggesting. The customer will be horrified to be told within the month that the original work must be redone AND additional work also is required. if you question the quality of the work, the owners will twist the facts to suggest you are the issue because they do not stand behind their work at all...If they used quality materials AND discussed all of the work that should be done to repair the shoe, then the work would probably last for more than a month. So, if you return to ask why the work has not lasted more than a week, be prepared to be told that you are insulting them and of course they do not want to service you, so if you are dissatisfied, you need to go to small claims court....Getting quality work means you need to proactively insist that each inch of the shoe be discussed and the alternatives available for repair, BUT you need to get their attention to get a quality and appropriate estimate....So VERY PRICEY WORK; bad, rude attitudes and the quality of workmanship is unlikely to last more than a couple of wearings...BUYER BE CAREFUL with these hustlers. They don't seem to think they need your business and they sure don't care about the customer...just taking your hard earned dollars...In their opinion, they are king and they are doing you a favor to spend any time on your shoe.
Pay First NEVER AGAIN! – I went to Anthony's because it was close to work and was recommended by coworkers. Honestly, I was surprised to find out how much it was going to cost to fix the heels of my shoes, it was $5 less than what I paid for the shoes. I was even more surprised when she said I had to pay first, then she pointed to their sign that states you have to pay first. I paid in CASH. BIG MISTAKE. As every human does at times, I lost my receipt. I go in and explain I lost my receipt. She says that I have not paid and if I did pay their computer would show it. If you have a sign in your store that requires customers to PAY FIRST there should be no question as to whether they have paid when they come in to pick up their item(s).
Don't listen to the raves! – I went to Anthony's because of a good review on Citysearch. What a mistake! I've gone there twice and been charged almost as much as the shoe I bought both times. And what's with the Manhattan-style customer service? Not to mention I came in 3 days after a pair of shoes were supposed to be ready and they were still not fixed! Go somewhere else.
The best in the city – Anthony's has been fixing my family's shoes forever (30 years?). They really know what they are doing. The prices are excellent (very competitive) and the work is first rate. And, they are loyal to their customers, willing to go the extra mile (seek out special materials, rush a project, find a creative solution where it looked like there was none). If at all possible, I use Anthony's- especially if I care about the results.
