Best Sushi in San Fran – I feel the need to defend this place after reading ieatallthetime's review.

Sushi is my all time favorite food and I have spent years finding what I thought was the best sushi place in the three cities (Boston, New York and San Francisco) that I have lived in.

The service and decor are nothing to write home about but, it's a bare bones sushi restaurant and the quality of the food stands up to that.

There is something that the sushi chef once told me about the Himachi (Yellowtail) that explained why it cost more and it wasn't because it was frozen.

This is a fabulous place to go for great fish and a casual and cheap sushi experience. I have been to a number sushi places in San Fran, including Zushi Puzzle, and this place, while having less roll selection, is still the cheapest in terms of sushi, sashimi and maki and is better then the more expensive places.

Admitted to me they use frozen fish and overcharged me for FRESH fish! – I was conflicted about posting this info because I don't want to hurt a small business, but people shouldn't be hoodwinked! I have absolutely NO idea what the other reviewers are talking about when they say the fish is fresh and it's the best in the city. This is obvioulsy the only place they have ever eaten sushi.

This place is tiny and family run, which many times, can be great, but here it is not. The rolls are small and subpar , but as the only sushi place on the north end of polk street, beggars can't be choosers. I have never complained about the crappy service or lame decor, but last night took the cake.

I ordered the hamachi sashimi and the waiter made it a point to tell us it was really great and fresh and had just arrived today. I was excited. And it was good and fresh. BUT when the bill came they charged TWICE what the menu indicates. I asked him why the double charge and he told me that it was more expensive because it was fresh. I asked him what the other, everyday regular sashimi was and he said, "oh, that's frozen usually". So, not only did they not warn us that we would be charged more because it had just arrived, but didn't give us the option and then admitted that the menu stating that the sashi was "fresh raw fish" was basically a lie.

Ridiculous.

It might be hard to sell all their fish, but it's unaccpetable to advertise fresh fish at a certain price and then double charge customers by admitting that the fish is usually frozen. Don't overcharge your customers because they happen to be lucky enough to come on the day you get the fish delivered and then refuse to discount the price because you lie on your menu.

I'll never go here again - will do the hike down polk to sushi rock or over to skipjack on union if i have a real craving. Boo on this place!

Best Sushi with Decent Price – I gotta say - so far, this is the overall-best sushi place in SF. Decent price, very big Sushi with less rice. If you are a true-sushi lover, this is a must-try place.

Place is a bit small. Polk&Valejo - Great location.

Yummy sushi. – I live in the neighborhood so I come here at least once a month. Outside of J-town, it's my favorite sushi restaurant. Their sushi is very fresh, reasonably-priced and served in generous portions. My favorite standbys are the rainbow roll, hamachi lover roll, rock n roll and raw oysters. The space is small and the decor plain but the food makes up for it.

Get Raw fish here! – About as far from atmosphere from Sushi Groove South as you could think of, however the basic Sushi offering is on par with the larger more well known places.

The sushi seems fresh and succulent, the service is not bad, the menu is fairly extensive, if you like fish, not the best place to go though if one of your party isn't a great sushi fan.

The nearby Sushi Rock may be slightly more trendy, and offers a wider choice, but if you're after quality Sushi, then House of Sushi is your better bet in the neighbourhood
