User review by ressenburg – Took our out of towners here on happenstance... WOW were we impressed... will be back here again ASAP.
Worth the drive – My boyfriend and I were in SF having driven from SJ to shop, and we were browsing the Zagat's guide at Borders. We randomly picked this place since it had one of the highest Italian food ratings and luckily they could fit us in even without a reservation on the same day. The maitre d was extremely kind and gracious, comedic and helpful and we enjoyed every dish we ordered. By far it was the best Italian food I have ever had, and it is worth the drive. It is small, but well worth it. Be prepared to park down the street. One of the seating sections in a room near the front of the restaurant can get quite warm.
Don't even bother – I was there in May and had one of the worst restaurant experiences since I've moved to San Francisco. First, even though we had a reservation, we were made to wait 45 minutes to get seated. The food was terrible - my risotto was undercooked (the rice was still crunchy) and the grilled squid appetizer was greasy and flavorless. There are so many restaurant options to choose from in this city, why would anyone bother to go here?
Outstanding! – When having lunch at a SOMA italian restaurant the day before I asked the owner for another good italian area in the North Beach area that might be a bit more family-friendly. Without hesitation he recommended Ristorante Milano in the Russian Hill district. They were able to accomodate our party of 14 by breaking us into two groups (six kids, eight adults) The hostess gently expressed hope that we had made reservations. The food was outstanding - tremendous sauces. The tornarelli was terrific as was the gnocchi and the fettuccini with mushrooms and pancetta (I don't remember the name.) Excellent food and excellent service. Beautiful cameriere are a plus.
The Best! – Just the best Italian food in SF. Pasta and feather-light gnocchi made in the house.
Risottos are amazing. Best best tiramisu. Aldo is the perfect host.
The Best Italian Restaurant – This place was amazing. My boyfriend and I went here for our four year anniversary. Definitely not cheap but the food was great, our waiter was both charming and helpful, and we even received a surprise off-the-menu dessert. We started with the buffalo mozzarella special served with arugula and fennel. The arugula and fennel had a great vin and this was for sure the right dish to start with. The bf got the polenta with peppers, onions, and homemade sausage for his entree and loved it the whole way through. I ordered linguini with fresh tomatoes, mussels, and thin rectangles of a hard cheese. Also very delicious. The vibe was cozy, which the bf and I found to be just the right degree of romance.
I'll definitely be going back!
This is The Best Italian restaurant in the City. I have never had a bad dish there -and I've been going for at least 10 years! Last night I had the lasagna and it was perfect! My other favorite is the tonarelli - all the pasta is made fresh so it can't be beat. It's a great neighborhood place - friendly service, makes you feel at home. If you don't like this place - you're crazy!
Great Neighborhood Italian – Authentic Italian in an intimate atmosphere. Staff is very warm and friendly. Great WIne list. Like a mim vacation to Italy.
Worth every hill! – In a part of town with a lot of hills..... it's worth the hike up everyone of them to get to this gem. The service could not be better. The food is fantastic and the wine selection is affordable. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation at Milano's the next time your in San Fran.
Consistency and excellence – For years, this trattoria has offered the most wonderful and imaginatively prepared dishes, always using seasonal and very fresh ingredients. Most of their customers are "regulars" of very long standing and they never tire of the place.
