Sadly, gross – Coming from Chicago, I am used the spectacular and relatively reasonably priced sushi of San Francisco. I am therefore very disappointed when I find a place like this that serves 95% good sushi and then with one lazy cut, provides a piece of salmon with skin and fat to make it taste like you're eating bait. Worse yet, the chef and owner did not understand that even with fresh fish, a bad cut gives bad sushi. I cannot recommend.
bad in so many ways – sushi is not fresh and staff is obnoxious. i don't mind paying a premium for good sushi, but this place is not worth any price.
long waits, cranky staff and overpriced so-so sushi – Cole Valley location-I am continually frustrated with this restaurant. I have gone there because I live in Cole Valley and everyone here seems to love it- I DON"T KNOW WHY! The staff are continually rude and impolite- esp for a Japanese place-and the food is mediocre and overpriced. Most locals act as though it's funny to be treated like poo-poo by the wait-staff.
Beware of take-out orders- they will pad the order or add on something you didn't order and when you ask them to go over the order- their accent will quickly become very thick so you can't understand them and after asking them 3 times to repeat what they said, you just forget it only to get home and realize you just paid for something you didn't order. If you must order take out from them --calculate the cost before you show up! and hold them to it!! Go to Zazie's or the great Italian place next door- much better food and waiters that at least pretend to like you and know how to smile.
Below average Japanese food – So-so food and way too expensive. I have been to this restaurant several times only because it is the only Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood. I kept giving it another try despite repeated disappointments. The sushi and sashimi aren't bad but they are too pricey for what they are. If you befriend the manager, sushi chef or the owner, you can actually ask for the freshest ingredients of the day from the sushi bar. Chicken teriyaki is always cooked extremely dry and the sauce is way too sweet. Udon is basically overcooked noodles in salty hot liquids. (I'm pretty sure they use fronzen udon that are sold in supermarkets.) Oyakodon is way too sweet and salty. Generally all the entrees I've tried have been too salty. San Francisco has many quality Japanese restaurants to offer and this is certainly not one of them.
Taking advantage of the tourists! – This place is really really bad. Hands down. Granted, the location at the wharf gets them plenty of clueless tourist money, but the restaurant is not worth the property it's located on.
Sushi - WAY sub par. Service - terrible. The waitresses won't even split your bill up on two credit cards. Price - ridiculous! They charge you $2 for a freaking soda and $8 for their tasteless rolls. Even the bento boxes are outrageously expensive.
The restaurant may be cute, but the owner brings her little dogs into the restaurant and lets them run around. I mean, come on - dogs in a restaurant?
This place is around due to its location and nothing else - if it were in any other neighborhood in the city, it would have failed.
Not so great. – The food is mediocre, the wait is often long, and you only get good service if they know you personally or recognize you as a regular. I've ordered take-out from this place about a dozen times over the span of two months and was always greeted by the same rude greeting, followed by a hurried "take your food and leave" attitude. I've seen people treated like royalty before and after me almost every single time I've gone there. Not worth the annoyance for mediocre sushi, in my humble opinion.
User review by bravehearted – I love to eat and therefore I love restaurants. I have been to both the Cole St. and Hyde St. locations since 97 and the food is absolutely incredible. Their menus exhibit some of the more traditional items but also get creative with delectable results. A broad selection of beverages are available both of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties. Their appetizers are amazing (pot stickers, soybeans, saladsyou name it). Their sushi is fantastic, ultra fresh, and the kitchen foods are equally delicious. My favorite hot food items are the Sizzling Clay Pot and the Red Snapper entree. The portions are generous, which isnt often the case in many restaurants and the service, especially on Hyde St., (it's much larger which helps) is very gracious. All things considered, I think its the best value for Japanese food in the city.
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors – Busy Wharf restaurant serves up sushi and Japanese entrees at reasonable prices.
Great value and friendly service! – We found this place in Zagat's and decided to try it out. We were pleasantly surprised by both the freshness and large portions of sushi. We will be back on our next trip to San Francisco!
Excellent Sushi in San Fran – I went on Citysearch prior to a trip to San Fran and based on the reviews I made a reservation here. What a great meal. Great service and excellent sushi! Just as good as Japan. Highly recommended.
