Dimly Lit; Free Gummy Bears. Dark and casual, this is a nice place to relax until you are drunk enough to think its funny to throw the free gummy bears at other people in the bar, preferably ones you don't know.
Cute. This is a cute, little neighborhood bar. it's dark and small and usually gets crowded towards the evening. Nothing really special about it though, although the bartenders make a decent drink. There are better places to go to, but if you are on Polk St. it's worth it to stop in for a drink...then move on.
Bad service, poor charachter. Fairly boring bar with terrible service. The bartenders were about the slowest I've ever seen, and weren't friendly. I left my credit card there, only to find out the next day that the bartender had added a tip of $1.50 per drink!! Who would pay so much for such terrible service? I wish I could make $1.50 every 30 seconds to pour a beer! When I asked to talk to the manager about it, he wasn't there, and the next day's bartender was "new" and didn't know how to fix it. I was never able to contact the manager, so I gave up and let them steal my money.
Good neighborhood bar. One of the better neighborhood bars in SF, Tonic's ambience combined with it's skillful bartenders and daily happy hour specials make it worth ducking out of the fog to enjoy. The jukebox has one of the best collection of CDs I've seen at a local watering hole. Gummi bears instead of beer nuts make for a nice touch, but your feet will be sticking to the floor by closing time.
An upscale mixer for singles on the prowl in Russian Hill..
In Short
Funky velvet couches and artful metal chairs fill this stylish little lounge. The bar itself takes up nearly half the room and is backed by two large mirrors, perfect for patrons to check out that hottie at the end of the bar. This place is relaxed and enjoyable on weeknights, but crowded and a bit of a meet-market scene on weekends. Service is always attentive. A jukebox and a lone (rarely used) TV provide the only real diversion. It's all about upscale drinks, conversation and picking up.
Nice spot - abnoxious bartender.
I recently got a chance to check out Tonic thanks to a friend's engagement party. By the time we left, the place was open to the public and getting crowded. Upon closing out the tab the bartended let me know that it was a $15 minimun and the drinks that I had to buy only amounted to $12 despite our group buying several hundreds of dollars worth of drinks. I tried to fix the situation by offering to add a $3 tips (seemed friendly) but was quickly dismissed by a very abnoxious bar tender that he didn't care if I was part of the party that was being held there and that I should buy another drink or go find and ATM. Clearly not a place that is interested in repeate business.
The drinks are ok, the music is a bit too loud, you be the judge.
Pretty good. It's convenient to stop in and have a drink on the way home from work. It gets crowded later on, not bad if you like that kind of thing. the drinks are good and the bartenders are entertaining.
Great Neighborhood watering hole. I went here on a Tuesday night, so i'm sure that had something to do with my experience. The place was a low key hang-out spot. The bartender was really cool and hipped us to a new drink. The juke box played an ecclectic mix of songs. If you go on a Tuesday, don't expect to get any numbers or see lots of women on the prowl. I'd be curious to see what the place is like on the weekends.
Great Neighborhood Bar!. Tonic is definitely my favorite neighborhood bar. Weekdays are chill, and the bartenders are always friendly. It also has a great vibe on the weekend when it's busy. I seem to always run into friends there since a lot of people from the neighborhood frequent the spot. Great jukbox too!
Great Bartender, Cheap Drinks. From the reviews I gather this place is not suitably hip. I'm evidently not hip enough to care. During two visits we had the same excellent bartender. Since we stopped by for before-dinner cocktails, the drink prices were great. Then off for a short unstable walk to any of the great Polk street restaurants!
