They didn't cook my grilled fish right. I felt bad after eating the fish.
good rolls, good crowd – Moki's moved down the street to a larger location, it's a local gem of the Bernal Heights area. The rolls are more innovative than usual - take the Drum Roll with mango or the Moki Special with jalepeno - you might thnk it's strange but both are delicious. We weren't wowed by the ribs appetizer but enjoyed the fried calamari. The new place is more completely decorated and allows more of its eccetic and loyal patrons to dine, it has a low-key yet hip vibe. During peak dining expect to wait.
Go for the Grill not the sushi! – Sadly, yet once again my hopes for a great sushi restaurant find in noe/mission/bernal neighborhood have been thwarted. We had two maki rolls (something that claimed to have eel and the other that if viewed through a microscope would have revealed salmon), but all I tasted was rice. The 3 seaweed salad was good. But the items from the grill were definitely better than the so called "sushi" dishes. We had the shrimp which was a little mild and lacking but the 2 items I liked were the baby back ribs with wasabi mash potatoes and the chicken satay. Good authentic pacific flavors there. I enjoyed their saki selection and personable service. Next time I am going to go for their fish entrees. I think this place has potential, so going to give it another chance.
Very good sushi, if not "authentic" – I've been eating sushi for over 20 years and I have to say I gotten a little bored with precious, completely authentic and generally overpriced sushi. Food, like art, is not static and it's great to try the innovative/funky combinations here. Love.
My Favorite – Not only are the prices resonable and the sushi innovative but it is consistently fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly and hip but not too hip. For those of you who prefer a more traditional sushi experience this may not be the place for you. But if you like your sushi with mango, macadamie nuts or perhaps some jalapeno then go for it. They also have a wide selection of other non sushi non traditional dishes as well as some great vegan treats on occasion. The new place gets a little noisy so we try and go early and avoid the crowds. But mokis, hands down, is my favorite sushi place in the city.
i dont understand the hype – there are many sushi places to eat but this place is fancy sushi, that is not worth it. it fushion and it's different, but for my buck i rather go to jimisan.. which is different, bigger and a lot more tasty!
Everything fresh and delicious/ great neighborhood spot! – Last Tuesday, my friend took me for my first time at Moki's new location on Cortland. Everything we had was so good. The blue cheese pear salad was excellent as was the delicious drum roll which is crab mix, mango and mint. Also enjoyed the fresh hamachi nigiri and the sake sashimi in the shape of a beautiful big flower. Everything the chefs put out is creative and tastes so good. Dessert was a delicious Persian lime tart.
Mmmm. Can't wait to go back!
Great New Space, Same Fab Food – Heard to believe previous user review - we've eaten at Moki's at least ten times in the last six months and haven't had anything less than a GREAT meal...EVER. LOVE their new space: the burnt red and gold walls give it a warm, cozy feel, much like their previous location (miss the patio, but hear their landlord at the old place forced them out). The fish is SUPER fresh and generously portioned, the rolls are creative and stuffed with wonderfully different ingredients like arugula, cilantro, mango, etc. Our vegetarian friends always find plenty on the menu to eat, also things like salads and grilled foods as well for people who don't like sushi. Our current favorite rolls include the Ecstasy (mmm), Salmon Ceviche maki, Stop Drop and Roll (spicy hotate and veggies). Girlfriend LOVES the Pear and Blue Cheese Salad and the Chocolate Decadence dessert (awesome). The place has quieted down considerably since they've added special ceiling tiles, and the service has also gotten WAAAY better than old location had. We love to go there and people watch, as the place is full of funky SF locals. Really, you can't miss with this place - definitely our FAVORITE sushi-plus place.
Stick to the cooked food - look elsewhere for good sushi – I love sushi and this place was so far below average, it's not even worth a shot. I went with a group so we sampled a pretty good % of the menu, and there was nothing good to report. The mango/ahi spring rolls tasted like bitter cabbage and the mango was crunchy! How do you serve that? And, the sushi... There was too much rice in the nigiri and the fish portions were very small. Also, the toro is supposed to melt in your mouth, not cause you to gag because you can't chew through it! And, the rolls, don't get me started. I'm a big fan of blowfish and other places where the rolls actually have flavor. The only exception was the spicy tuna roll which has ginger in - pretty tasty. Overall: BUYER BEWARE - DO NOT TRY THE SUSHI HERE. I will admit the edamame and spareribs were pretty damn tasty, but honestly, they were the ONLY good things we had besides the sake and beer. This place has potential - cute atmosphere and good desserts, but please do something about the buyer and sushi chef.
Excellent fish, slow service – I have had sushi here close to 20 times and while the fish is the best, the service is severely lacking. Last night I waited 20 minutes for the server to even come to the table and then another 45 to order desert. Sure it is busy but not enough (ever) to ignore customers. We complained and she did not even apologize. C'mon, be better, your customers are loyal, be loyal back.
