Shabby chic in the suburbs. I like the lunch and brunch menus best. To die for: Butter Pecan pancakes w/ Banana in Caramel Sauce.

Wow. What a Hidden Gem! – I was at a freind's house who served a cake form Zakes. They told me that their family had been buying cakes there for 20 years. It was simply the best dessert I have ever had, and I take this stuff pretty seriously for an amateur. The they told me that Zakes was also a restaurant - so, of course, I went.

What an amazing and charming place. It is in a beautifully restored Victorian building. The two dining rooms are filled with incerdible oil paintings that are all food themed (be sure to see the fish pianting!). The atmosphere is very homey and comfortable, although it can get really really busy at lunch! I had a truly interesting salad made with organic greens and an amazing potato leek soup. I inquired about the soup, and a lovely waitress with a British accent informed me that the chef makes all of the stocks from scratch and has refined her recipes for more than 25 years!

I liked the place so much that I went back for dinner a couple of weeks later. I happened to go on a week night, and so one of the options was a prix fixe menu for $25. What a buy! Plus, this is a BYO! I had Squash Raviolis in a deliciously herbed sauce, followed by Halibut in a delicious red wine reduction. The sauces of the appetizer and the entree were a fine contrast of light and herby and bold. The word craftsmanship came to mind as I dabbed the last bit of the fish's sauce with the fine bread that is baked at the restaurant. And then dessert! Also included in the Prix Fixe that night was a crumbly tart shell filled with fresh creme patiserie and topped with raspberries and blackberries. As someone who hardly ever orders dessert, I could not have been more pleased.

I was told that the menu and the prix fixe offerings change fairly regularly to take advantage of what is availble and fresh. The chef apparently likes to use as many local ingredients from small farms as possible, so offerings change often.

I cannot wait to return and see what is there for my next visit!

Engagement Party Fiasco – We recently ordered a cake for our engagement party (Thank God it wasn't our wedding). My mother first stopped in to order the cake herself and she stood there waiting for help while the waitresses and staff members were too busy to assist her. They would start waiting on her then leave her to go do something else, then another person would come over and she'd need to start all over again. So she left very upset and fustrated- with no cake ordered. I went back with her the next day to try yet again. Finally a lady with blonde hair and an english accent(I believe) was helpful and we got a sample of the cake and order their Mocha Gateaux- which is french vanilla cake with a layer of chocolate filling and a layer of raspberry filling topped with coffee icing. Sounds very good, tasted good at the tasting- but once the cake was cut we discover it was just chocolate -no raspberry which was a huge selling point for us. So we called the next day to bring this to the attention of the manager and she was incredibly rude saying that we were told that we would only get one layer (she wasn't even there that day to know what we were told) Actually two of her employees assured us that there would be both fillings included! She says she'll give us $20.00 back and a gift certificate (which I don't want). Overall it was a terrible experience for an average cake. I definately won't be ordering my wedding cake from Zakes and I won't be visiting for lunch anytime soon. Don't waste your time or money or risk your big day here.
