Hungarian Goulash, a side of potato pancakes and dark German beer: doesn't get better than this late night dining.

Fun place to throw birthdays for adults – I have visited Germany twice in the past year and loved it, I would live there, but besides the point, I thought I'd bring my husband to this place for his birthday. It was amazingly fun with the polka band, large portions of beer and food, and the "schtick" is that the server is abrupt like. This is all show, the waitstaff is actually really nice and accomodating, you just better know what you want when they come around to take your order. My husband loved this place so much that he brings all his friends for their birthdays to Schroeders and they love it as well, das boot is amazing but you should check out their 5 liter monster stein of beer, beware of falling in! Great food, great atmosphere, it's fantastic.

Don't Do It! – As a German who appreciates good food and nice people I would not recommend this place to anyone. Food was lousy, the service was extremely rude. No more words needed!

Enjoyed a Great Lunch with my Dad. – Back in May, my Dad came out for a visit, and we dined at Schroeder's after shopping at Embarcadero. I had the Hungarian Goulash with Spatzle, he had the German Meatloaf. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the space is beautiful. Murals adorn the walls, the bar and sideboards are a beautiful wood and brass, and the restaurant is lit with glowing antique German light fixtures. The place reminded us both of the types of restaurants my grandfather and great grandfather took us to in Chicago. A must try!

Romantic and Lively with Affable Hosts and Servers – I love the big burly gentleman host with the ready smile and kindly ways. I'm just a fool for a handlebar moustache! I've lived in the City for 12 years and somehow had missed this place--I feel like Indiana Jones discovering a lost treasure! During a recent visit my friend ordered Kassler Rippchen and I'm not ashamed to say I couldn't keep my fork off of his plate! If you like to eat and you like to make merry, this is a terrific place to enjoy hearty fare and learn how to polka.

Tourist rip-off – We came to invite my parents in law from Europe because they love german food. The owner asked us where we are from to determine our tourist status. After we paid the waitress came back complaining that we didn't give her enough tip, showing us bills from other guests and even bringing a calculator. Although I'm german, but living in the States, I'm familiar with the tip procedure and know that this was not only completely rude but not legal either. It put me in an embarrasing situation and we left the restaurant with an awkward feeling. Other than that the food is very americanised. I won't recommand the restaurant to my friends.

Generous portions of authentic German food and culture define this Financial District eatery. – In Short
Operating in various locations within the city since 1893, this restaurant has a long history of serving hearty Bavarian dishes to downtown diners. In a dining room punctuated by Herman Richter murals, a rosewood bar and decorative beer steins, patrons sup on classic offerings like Weiner Schnitzel, bratwurst, Hungarian goulash and potato pancakes, while the less adventurous stick to American staples like burgers, steaks and grilled salmon. Several meatless entrees on the menu satisfy vegetarians.

My experience was quite different – I went to Schroeder's on a Friday night at about 7pm and I could barely squeeze in. There must have been over 200 people dancing to a band that featured a great female accordion player. Everyone seemed to be having a great time and the people that were having dinner were chowing down with gusto. Yes, it's not Chez Panisse but DUH! I love the Goulash.

And on some occasions they feature Pinkelwurst!

Best order meat! – I made the mistake of ordering the "hot vegetarian platter" here and it was an insulting mess. The place is enormous and fun, and the waitstaff friendly. I think meat is thing here, not vegetables.

You Want German Food? – This is the place for German food. My daughter lives in Germany and on her last visit home she brought her German/Russian boyfriend. He was impressed by the service, atomsphere, and most of all the food! I have visisted Germany and I must say Shrodeder's is as close as you can get in San Francisco to being in a German eatry. The beer is wonderful, too.
