A Wonderful Dining Experience - Restaurant Week Fall '07 – This review is a bit late - but I have to say, that I was very pleasantly surprised by the food at Ruth's Chris. This was my first visit to the restaurant - and I was very impressed by the professional service and attentiveness during this busy time. The salad was phenomenal, the filet mignon was served perfectly and the dessert was scrumptious. I am VERY excited to visit tomorrow night for Philadelphia's Restaurant Week Winter '08!
Absolutely Horrible!!! – My family and I decided to have dinner after a concert next door. What a complete disappointment. We were greeted by a massively large maitre de (lay off the steak buddy) that made a big scene about us not having reservations even though the place was empty at 5:30. My caeser salad had a long black hair in it, which the manager apologized for, and my steak was well done on one side and rare on the other. For $35 for a piece of meat that comes with nothing else I would expect nothing less than perfection. My family was completely disgusted by the meal and the service, just a slab of fish with no presentation or a single veggie, what a rip off. It seemed our waiter would have better off at home watching football rather than snickering and making rude comments to his customers. I am warning anyone that is considering eating here: STAY AWAY!!!
Worst meal ever! – My husband and I ate at this Ruth's location (our first visit to a Ruth's) and were tremendously disappointed. To start with, we had a reservation and had to wait 45 minutes in the waiting area where we were blasted by cold winter air everytime the door opened! We figured we would try Ruth's because a family member highly recommended it. I had to wonder if they do not know what good food is or are they easily satisfied because this was by far the WORST meal I ever had. Even the baked potato was terrible. We both ordered medium and got a very rare piece of meat on a sizzling plate that spattered greese all over my clothing. I realize this is part of their "trademark experience" but I certainly don't want to have to tuck a napkin in my collar for my entire meal so that I don't ruin my clothing or other persoanl belongings like my handbag. I sent my filet back because it was practically still moving on my plate, but it was still almost unedible after I got it back. It had an awful taste and was not even tender (mind you it wasn't even tender when it was rare), plus the baked potatato tasted like it was rolled around in dirt before it was baked. We vow to NEVER, EVER return to a Ruth's nor recommend it. We knew it had to be bad when even my husband complained, as he rarely complains about any dining experience. He eats steak and filets often and this was the first time he ever said he will never return to a rastaurant. It was a very poor dining experience and a huge let down. Don't believe the hype on this place. It is not worth the time or money.
great – best steakhouse we've been to in philly...even the seafood dishes are yummy...the shoestring fries are best...gets expensive since everything is a la carte
Huge Disappointment! Way overpriced!!! – My wife and I made a special night on the 23rd. We had tickets to the Philly Pops and I made reservations at your restuarant. Let me first say the waiter we had was horrible, he was barely at our table and when he took our order it was like we were bothering him. Then we get the entre the steak was so bland i had to request A1 which I nor my wife never use. There was no flavoring at all on the steaks, the potato was excellent but after spending 200 dollars and the only thing memorable is the potato that is sad. This was our first and last stop and ruth chris!!
Ponderosa is about as good – Unfortunately, I have to emit precisely the same criticisms on this "Restaurant" as I've read thus far. Before ordering steak in the U.S., I always make sure to ask if medium-rare means true medium-rare (warm, red center). My steak came out no less than medium-well. I was disappointed, given the pride that this restaurant claims to take in the preparation of its steaks. Go to Capital Grille, Brasserie Perrier or Morton's if you want a good cut of steak done the way you want it.
NOT IMPRESSED – I had high expectations for this restaurant, but wasn't impressed at all! The food just isn't good enough in comparison to other restaurants in Center City. My steak was dry and tough, I've had much better steaks at other places not specializing in them! Our appetizer was probably the biggest disappointment. The waitress described it as a delicious seafood platter with shrimp cocktail, crab meat and ahi tuna, large enough for two people to share. Well...we got 5 shrimps, 5 small pieces of tuna and a table spoon of crab meat over the salad leaves. There was absolutely nothing special about this dish with the exception of it being covered by a very spicy sauce (both my husband and I don't like spicy food). Upon getting our bill we discovered that this appetizer platter cost us $27. I don't recall ever paying so much for the appetizer even in much better and more expensive restaurants. In addition to the steaks we got a plate of Au Gratin potatoes (just OK), and sauteed mushrooms (which were simply disgusting). You can go to Applebees or Red Lobster and get the same "sophisticated" American food. Actually I think seafood platter would be much better at Red Lobster. The service was good, but who needs the service if the food lacks the quality??? I mean, if you've never been to any other place than your local food chain restaurant, you might actually like this place; but if you often dine in Center City - avoid Ruth Steak House at all costs!
The most tender filet I've ever had, Fast & Friendly Service – I just went to Ruth's Chris for restaurant week and it was very, very good. It was a bit crowded and my table wasn't too great (right next to the kitchen) but I think that on an ordinary night (and at a different table) it would've been very relaxing. I had a caesar salad, petite filet with mashed potatoes, and chocolate mousse cheesecake. Everything was excellent. The dessert was the best part of the meal! I could not believe how fast our food came out. We didn't have to wait long at all, despite how crowded it was. All of the wait staff were friendly and unpretentious. Definitely a bargain meal for restaurant week!
Great for those who appreciate a great steak – This is the first time I have ever posted a review, but after seeing so many people complaining I had to. Everything about this place is great, I don't think I am exagerating at all. The one thing you have to remember is that you are eating at an expensive restaurant in center city Philadelphia, and your wallet is going to know it afterwards. But if this a problem, you probably shouldn't be going out to dinner in center city. I've been there twice this year and just made reservations for New Years eve, I highly recommend Ruth's Chris.
After 10 years what happened? – After 10 years of enjoyment, the last two visits were horrible. I am not sure if local management changed or what. but the servbice was horrible. out of 8 meals two were wrong, side were not delivered till 10 minutes after the steaks. Local manager was not helpful. very very bad. It's a shame as we visited Ruths four or five times a year over the past 10 years. Just a shame and after a letter was sent not a word from them
