Of course this comfort-food haven is going to have amazing fried chicken, the trick here is they top it on a crunchy waffle.
Don't waste your time. – Service and food are lousy. Staff is rude. There are many better choices in the same block.
Great comfort food – My boyfriend and I go there almost once a week (or twice every three weeks) and love it there!
Their mac and cheese it to die for, and everything else we've every gotten is delicious!! (He didn't like the pulled pork as much as the other stuff, but still found it edible) It's really great for when you want quality food, a nice place to sit down and enjoy a comfy and tasty meal.
Great wait staff as well.
Brunch was also good here. Very tasty and large portions.
Rip Off Report – This place is good or bad, depending on the day and when you're paying top dollar for comfy food it needs to be a good, every time. I've read some comments below about how delicious the mac & cheese is. Well, I don't think it's that great. If you're going to pay $8 for a cup (cooked-- no kidding, I measured it) of mac & cheese it better be the best mac & cheese ever. On a scale of 1 - 10, this one's a 5.
The creamed spinach-- $6 side (1 cup worth) SALTY!! How does salty creamed spinach get past the kitchen?? You would think the chef/cook would taste their recipe once in awhile. Did they use a recipe or did they just wing it??
Cobb Salad-- AWESOME- this is good and I think its a fair price. No complaints, it's actually difficult to finish and I've had it enough times to know its pretty consistent.
Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup-- DELISH I'm a huge fan. This is another goodie.
Bottom Line-- there's no consistency. Everything on the menu looks good but when you get small portions and know what the small portions cost, you kinda lose your appetite.
Excellent food! – We were in Philadelphia sight seeing for the day, and had a recommendation from some of my daughter's friends to be sure to eat supper at Jones. We got there at about 3:30 PM, and were told they wouldn't be serving supper until 5:00, but the bar was open and we were welcome to sit and have a drink while we waited. It was hot out, so we decided to have a few drinks and stay in the cool while we waited for supper time to arrive.
The bar staff was friendly, the drinks were refreshing and good, and the time passed easily. The hostess asked if we were ready to be seated at 5:00, and took us to our seats. Our waitress was very friendly, and very efficient. Among our group, we ordered the meatloaf, crabcake dinner, the pistachio tilapia, and the chicken and waffles. Everyone thought their meal was excellent. I would be proud to recommend this restaurant to my friends and family (I already have!)
Another falling starr for steven – Well break out the box wine...this food made me hurl especially with the prices. I'm sick of cities try to mimick the greatest city of all time...new york of course. The food is as trite and hackneyed as the food. Meatloaf great shoot me. Come on..mac and cheese 3 diff. cheeses i mean do something different. The staff resembles something outta of red hook except the hook is there is no hook the people wear the same shirts the food is bland and tastes prepackaged...nothing is fresh. Steven Starr stick to music bro.
Pretty Lousy... Probably the most disappointing Starr Restaurant out there – Got a Starr gift certificate, and decided Jones looked like a safe bet - how can you go wrong with comfort food, right? Showed up at the restaurant, the place is packed - a promising sign. The decor is contemporary and inspiring. The hostess sat us by one of the fireplaces, which was a nice touch. Then came the menu's. I went with the New England clam chowder to start, and the Meatloaf and Mash as my entree. Wife got a salad and filet mignon. I should have known to look around before I placed that order, as the entire restaurant seemed to be dining on Fried Chicken, the pot-pie, or a monstrous salad. But, I was confident that straying from the norm would still net me a satisfying meal. My clam chowder arrived in a small bowl, best described as "cute," filled half way with the thinnest clam chowder I have ever encountered. It was as thin as chicken broth, and pretty bland. Wife didnt complain about her salad, but you would really have to try to screw up a salad. When our entree's came, we both had a laugh. There was my meatloaf - 3 tiny, thin slices, laying on a scoop of mashed potatoes. Wife's filet mignon was the most laughable looking steak we've seen outside of TGI Fridays, looking at though it was retrieved from a burning building. She reported that it was dry and dissapointing, considering it was $28. Lesson Learned. Our petite entrees were gone in 4 minutes, so we had plenty of room for dessert. We went with these fried cheesecake bits, which were actually very good. Other then that, the food was thoroughly disappointing, considering the $80 bill. After dinner, we thought about trying a different Starr Restaruant, somewhere that might try a little harder, be a little better. We both agreed however, that the restaurants probably all share the same DNA and, possibly, same ingredients. Therefore, next time we get a Starr Restaurants certificate, its going on eBay.
GREAT brunch. – Jones is AWESOME. I went with my boyfriend for Sunday morning brunch. It was very crowded, so we opted to sit at the bar rather than wait for a seat. I had a hot chocolate (alcohol included) which was amazing, he had a bloody mary. The bloody mary was spicy, but good. We both got Huevos Rancheros, which were the best we've had here. Service was quick, the ambiance was great, and the restaurant was very clean despite the fact that they had lots of customers coming in and out. Looking at everyone else's food, we could tell that EVERYTHING there must be great.
Amazing food, great service!!!! – I was a little worried about the service when I read the previous reviews, but management must have taken notice because the service was IMPECCABLE!!! Everyone was extraordinarily friendly from the host to bartender to waiter. We were updated 3x about when our table would be ready, while we were waiting at the bar. Then the manager actually came over to our table to check up on everything. And when I accidentally left my doggie bag, the manager looked all over the restaurant to find it. And the food was delish!! I ordered the salmon and my friend ordered the tilapia both dishes just melted in your mouth. The decor was cute 70's rec room, but not overly kitschy. And the music was great too. Listening to the Stones while dining is a nice respite from the normal lounge music drone. I am from South Jersey but I live in NY and eat out a lot so I'm really picky, but I was pleasantly surprised at the level of service and quality of food. I'll be back!!
Thursday Night Marvel – Went to dinner with a friend, the wait for less than five minutes, which is particularly speedy in a restaurant like this in Philadelphia. The waiters were pleasant and very straightforward about the food, however, they trick you into buying FIJI water instead of tap and thats a $5 dollar extra for like half a glass. MAKE SURE YOU JUST ASK FOR TAP WATER! Overall, the food is very delicious. Dumplings and Mac and Cheese are unbelievable. Had the Thanksgiving Dinner, and it was awesome. The bill for 3 appetizers, two entrees and that stupid water just cracked 50 bucks. Very reasonable for the amount of food served.
A true Starr – My husband and I love eating at Jones - it has the classiness of a Starr restaurant without being overly pretentious like some of the others! The Asian dumpling appetizers are a treat. The Meatloaf is an absolute MUST, and the fried chicken is also very yummy. Cocktails here are absolutely deelish. Pasta dishes are just okay here, but if you are eating here in the first place, most likely you came for the homestyle dishes, not the pasta (go across the street for La Scala's for that !)
