Editorial Review for Academy of Music – by Paul Pelkonen
In Short
The Academy stage has hosted the likes of Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti, and Joan Sutherland. Composers Piotr Tchaikovsky, Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, and Richard Strauss have graced its podium. Until the Kimmel Center became the Philadelphia Orchestra's new home, the Academy hosted a venerable line of six Philadelphia Orchestra music directors, from Eugene Ormandy through Leopold Stokowski, Riccardo Muti, and Wolfgang Sawallisch. Current resident companies are the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

The ExtrasThe theater also features a 350-seat Grand Ballroom, which is used for chamber music concerts, lectures, and other smaller-scale events.
Know Before You GoOne of America's oldest concert halls still in operation, this beautiful open-horseshoe shaped, 2,897-seat auditorium is known for its excellent sightlines, warm acoustics (a three-foot-thick brick wall around the auditorium helps keep musical sounds in and street sounds out), and a half-ton crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
