COCKROACHES EVERYWHERE!! – I have been to this restaurant several times and never again. Upon sitting down a cockroach climbed up the wall next to our table. We moved to another table and yet another cockroach was climbing on the upholstery on the seat back. The restaurant staff did nothing except reset the table we had left for their next customers. We left without eating. Will never go back as there are many better and CLEANER sushi places in the city.
Roaches all over – In the ten minutes we were in Hikaru, Manayunk Mr. ROACH was on the wall crawling around by our head/shoulder area. The waitress moved us to a different table across the restaurant which had some relatives (roaches) running around as well. Just imagine the family reunion going on in the kitchen!!! This occurred on 1.7.2010.
The staff did not care about the situation with the roaches and said the roaches are there because the restaurant is close to the canal.
Best place to eat in Philadelphia – Whether you want lunch, dinner, late night, sushi, teppan (table cooking), or other dishes, Hikaru by far surpasses the competition. The fish and meat are excellent quality, the portions are huge, the sushi selection is enormous, and the sauces are unique and full of flavor (and homemade!). Everyone there is extremely accomodating, friendly, and fun! Hikaru isn't just a meal, it is an experience! It is the perfect place for a business lunch, a romantic dinner, or a birthday celebration
Awesome Sushi and hibachi – When visiting Philadelphia, my wife and I sought out a restaurant with good sushi (for her) and good hibachi (for me). The meal was fantastic. The sushi was excellent: not the best we've ever had, but very, very good. The hibachi was the best we have had, and we have eaten at 5-10 such restaurants across the country. They season the meat before putting it on the grill, which makes all the difference. Our chef was fairly new, so some of the "tricks" they do weren't executed perfectly, but it was still a good show with extra magic show. On the other hand, the food was excellent. They put cooking a good meal above the showmanship. I usually order hibachi steak, because the chicken can be bland. In this case, I ordered a combination of scallop, steak and chicken. All were excellent, but the chicken was actually better than the steak! I highly recommend this as a place for anyone looking for good hibachi or sushi. It can be a little pricey, but that is true of most good sushi and hibachi restaurants.
fun night! – I thought it was pretty good. I go to hibachi restaurants all the time so I can really tell if its bad or not. The food was pretty good, small portions for what you pay. The chef was enjoyable and made the experience fun. Sushi pretty good. But it's not the cheapest around especially for the portions you get. But I recommend it for a fun family night , or night out with the girls.
Service bad! Food bad! Another good customer! – The service is unbelievable bad. The chef made too many mistakes. He put the dirty bowl on his slice and used this slice cook without cleaning it. He also used his hand to touch the slice and also didn't clean that. After he finish cooking, he serviced to a good customer. I called a good customer because he didn't show his uncomfortable and still had a little rice. I believe he can't show his comfortable because he had a date with a beautiful girl, otherwise I can't find any reason to let a person ate those food which mixed the duty and rice. The food is also bad. Beef and scollop overcooked. Waitress didn't show too much smile. I almost couldn't find any reason to convince me come back to here again besides I want to train my stomach.
Sushi ok; avoid hibachi. – I sat at hibachi table for my first dinner at Hikaru. Sushi was good but hibachi tasted terrible and looked scary. The chef put too much ginger sauce in the fried rice; it's the wettest and saltest fried rice I ever had. Shrimp was not fully cooked, and soy sauce and lemon juice didn't match for me. Chicken was over cooked and there was too many sesame with it. The chef drop a bowl of fried rice on the cooking table but he still served it to another customer. The chef we had needs more practice and care about hygiene.
Great date restaurant... – ...and the sushi is actually very good as well! This place has very fresh fish--of course not to the ultra-premium quality of Morimoto's, but to compare this place to Morimoto's (as other reviewers have tried to do) is ridiculous. This is one of the few places where I would trust ordering the Uni and not worry about getting burned by unfresh product. As others have mentioned, go straight to the second floor to avoid the teppan-yaki smoke, and get seated by the Main Street windows if possible--it's great for people watching.
Do take-out to avoid the service! – I stopped in for a 'quick' bite to eat this past weekend. Our waiter was hands down the worst server, I have ever come across! It took us an HOUR to get our food!! How is that possible, it's sushi! They must have pulled it out of the river!! My friends had to get a refill on their wine before the entree even came out!! We had to flag down the waiter to get us to get the refill!! We even overheard the neighboring patrons complaining that the guy wouldn't take their check and that they had to find someone to get them water, it was the running joke of the night, however none of us found it funny! People that were seated after us- left before us!! I made a point to ask him where our food was and he said it will be up next (I also stated that it had been waiting 45 minutes) We saw our platter sitting at the sushi counter for 15 minutes before it made it to our table. Without any apologies, pushing aside our glasses and other things on the table and plopped the food on the table. It absolutely ruined our night! We were so hungry and annoyed that we couldn't direct our conversation away from the terrible service or how annoyed we were! When he finally came to clear our dishes, he accidently dropped food from someone else's dirty plate on our table!! Ugh. NEVER AGAIN!
I use to live on Main Street and would order on a regular basis- it was fine and prompt- I would recommend doing the take out, to avoid the whole service fiasco!
Weak - you can do much better. – Just came back from our 1st visit to Hikaru and I have to say that I'm disappointed. After living in DC and NYC for past 8 yrs, I'll admit that my standards are high, but I found both Morimoto's and Sagami to compete very well to the Nobu's and Sushi Taro or Konami's of NYC & DC, respectively. Hikaru, however, doesn't match up. Certainly not the value for the dollar. Sagami is much better value & fresher. Morimotos - another level or 2 above, entirely. We ordered the regular sushi dinner, and it came with a tough, chewy octopus, another less-than-fresh fish and a fake 'crab' leg atop rice which they were using as a filler - I think it's insulting to give me the fake crab as a 'fresh sushi' order. But maybe the regular clientle isn't so demanding? The service was inattentive, and they began washing down the sushi bar with tons of clorox while people were still sitting nearby, creating a bleach cloud which made the fresh fish much less appetizing. And it's not like it was so late (9:05PM on a THU night) that they couldn't have waited 15 mins for people to finish eating. And don't order the Sam Adams draft beer for $3.60, since it's served in a glass like those tiny juice glasses they used to give you at the diner - 6 oz, maybe - gimme a break, guys, the beer isn't going to make you that much poorer if you serve it to us in 12 oz glasses. Anyway, all in all, for the price, not worth it. Many better sushi places, and many better places in Manayunk, for you to go.
