This place was great! – I'm so surprised by some of the negative reviews about Gnocchi. I went last night and it was wonderful! I called ahead and was told on a Thursday night for two people that we didn't need a reservation. We were seated right away. The decor is low key but charming, the servers are authentically Italian and very pleasant. The frutti de mare was lovely and fresh, but the highlight was definitely the gnocchi....it was amazingly light and delicious. The prices were great too, especially since it's a BYOB. Our server encouraged us to take our time with our wine and our check. It's also a nice change from some other Philly BYOBs in that you're not sitting on top of your neighbor...there's plenty of space in between the tables. I'll definitely go back!
Too much salt spoiled it! – The food is definitely good but way TOO SALTY!!!! Be prepared to either drink a lot of water with your meal or remain parched for the next 24 hours.
Worst Dining Experience in Philadelphia – I went out to Gnocchi a few weeks ago with a group of friends for a night on the town. We tried to make reservations and were told we couldn't. When got to the empty restaurant, we were berated for not having reservations. That should have been a sign to us. It took us 40 minutes to get a waiter to our table to take our order. Once they did, our food took about the same amount of time. Around then (80 minutes later), the restaurant started to fill up. Although there were empty tables throughout, the hostess started to promise our table to a group waiting outside. However, we were still eating our food (decent but not anywhere close to Philly's finest Italian--or gnocchi for that matter, despite the restaurant's name). Given, the people outside were classless and staring at us, but it didn't help when the hostess went outside and started mimicking us until she realized that we saw her doing that. She turned bright red and came back inside to stand near our table. Guilt eventually overcame her and she came to tell us she wasn't talking about us--which was a clear indication that she was. We were horrified by how rude these people could be and how ungrateful of patronage. On top of it all, it just wasn't even worth it. We would've been better off going to any one of Gnocchi's greasepit neighbors on South Street...they would at least have been friendlier...
My Favorite BYOB – Gnocchi is the best !!!! This place has everything you'd want in a BYOB and more. The food is fantastically delicious, fresh and authentic. The atmosphere is upbeat , cozy, casual, and warm at the same time. The menu at gnocchi is pretty large, with several specials daily so you never get tired of eating there and you can always try something new. The gnocchi are DIVINE ... so light and tasty! I have sampled several meat and fish selections too and have always been impressed by the quality and quantity of the meal, especially at such affordable prices! It' a great place to have dinner with any size party. As a matter of fact they have an awesome tasting menu (fixed price) ideal for groups, so much fun and so much food !!!!! I encourage anyone who wants a great dining experience to try this place & I guarantee, you'll keep going back for more, & bringing you friends too !!!!!
A simple BYOB featuring Italian fare with American overtones. – The Food
You'll find no osso buco on Gnocchi's one-page menu. From Caesar salads to grilled seafood specials, dinners consist of lighter fare: salmon, chicken breast, octopus-even a chicken and artichoke sausage. Except, of course, for the doughy morsels for which the bistro is named. Gnocchi's three versions of gnocchi each comes in a rich sauce: Choose from tomato basil, spinach or asparagus. Order a plate alone, or choose a special, which comes with the day's gnocchi on the side. Most likely you'll be too full for dessert; ask for an espresso instead.
Gnocchi's decor is reminiscent of a New York City hideaway: pipes overhead, exposed brick walls, Italian frescoes. The space is small and cramped, with an open kitchen in the back and black-clad servers who scamper amongst tables and occasionally lock arms.
nice find – This is a great little byo at a good price. Nice selection of appetizers and pasta/veal dishes, plus the side of gnocchi with every dish is a nice touch. Friendly staff that sound like they are straight from Italy.
Horrible service for a large group. Rude staff and bad food. – We had our Christmas party at Gnocchi. Four of 20 had gathered by the door. The server asked us to either sit down at the table or wait ouside in 30 degree weather. Her temperment was a precursor for the evening to follow. They gave our party few choices. They were rushed. They were rude.
Most importantly the food was disappointing.
Try Villa Di Roma on 9th and Christian. They're not trying to be trendy. They're just a true Philly institution turning out good food at decent price.
After a scrap with the NJ police force, we arrived. Our party consisted of two amigos.
We doubted whether we would be seated since we arrived late, 10 minutes prior to closing , but we were seated swiftly.
The maître d' always had a kind countenance, not what you would expect, arriving 10 minutes before closing.
Our order was promptly taken, note we were not rushed. We were served fancy water and warm crusty bread, I only had one piece,my partner in crime finshed the rest.
Our meals were served piping hot in a flash! The food was delicious. My meal was creamy, just the right seasonings, and the chicken was cooked perfectly. I couldn't tell you how my counterpart's dish tasted because it was scarfed down in a blink.
We had a very pleasurable experience and I would reccommend Gnocchi to everyone. We will return, this time with wine!
Great Flavor Flare – I arrived with a social gathering of 2.
I forgot the wine at the house, but was promptly seated.
I now believe this was mostly due to the fact that we arrived 10 minutes before ultimate finishing time, woops.
Our maitre d' was quite pleasant & our food was prepared with cat-like reflexes.
I ordered DOUBLE chicken in the company of my pasta. Great flavor flare!
I would suggest it to a friend or even someone I dont even know at all!
Will never go back! – The table next to us were seated, ordered, and got appetetizers before we even got our menus! It took 45 minutes to get our food, which turned out to be dull, overcooked, and not worth the money. No one checked on us so we kept having to flag down people to even get water. This was a horrible BYOB. There are so many other really good restaurants that this one will not last.
