Mindless and horrible – This bar is the bar to go to if you can't afford a trip
to West Hollywood. If you enjoy a vacuous clueless clientele, brainless bulimic bartenders. and
weak tiny cocktails this is definitely THE place to go!
Just remember to bring extra cash to hand to the snotty doorman for the cover.
So dissapointing – I am really embarassed that we live in the "Gay Mecca" and the Castro has nothing better to offer than this excuse for a "dance bar". The line outside is just to make it look busier to passerby's and the cover is ridiculous. The drinks are fine, as are "most" of the crowd, if you don't mind seeing the same crowd over & over. Yes, the crowd is generally rude, and the music is bubble-gum pop with videos. It is really embarassing.
Embarrassingly cheesy – Bars like this belong in some backwards midwestern locale, not in the middle of the Castro. The atmosphere and most of the people are really generic, and the music is stale cheesy mainstream crap.
Was everyone bitter in 2002? – This place has come along way! The drinks are small but strong, and hey you can't beat 2 for 1 until 8:PM!! I think that the crowd varies from day to day--I personally like Sundays. Bummer that there are no video requests, but the DJ came down and talked to me and my friends, and was very nice (yeah they played my song!) I brought my friends in from Manchester, and they felt at home with the Euro-Pop-Dance stuff, and said that it was the best place they had been to in SF. So I don't see what all the negativity is all about--everyone was nice from top to bottom! (no pun intended).
The Sight and Smell is Worth It! – I dont know what all the fuss is about, the Badlands was great! I have traveled the world and been to so many dance clubs, gay and straight, and the Badlands ranks as one of the best. If youre into going somewhere and recognizing almost every song played and seeing the video to boot, youre in luck. The atmosphere is very accommodating and the crowd is relatively young with the exception of a few 40+. I have to say that the best part Badlands, or any club in California, is the fact no smoking is allowed inside. It gives you the chance to smell what everyone worked so hard on smelling like before they left their house! If you like popular dance music and you never knew a video existed for that song; Badlands should be on your list! BTW, what the hell was Mezzanine?? That place was terrible!
It's got it together – What the heck is up with people putting this place at #5, and having stupid tourist traps like The cafe rank #2? Come on. If you REALLY want a good time, and actually wanna hang with the locals... Go to badlands, and leave the cafe for the desperately hungry. At least at Badlands, you know your boy will be HOT! More than I can say about the cold excuses served up at the Cafe.
gay girls not welcome – I hate to do this, but I'm definatly leaving a review for the Badlands. I'm the biggest gayboi girl there is and love going out with my best friend Anthony. He came to visit from out of town and I wanted to take him here. The bouncer made us wait 20 minutes while he let other gay men walk past us. Steamed, I asked if we were even going to be "allowed" in. He gave us an attitutde and finally let us in. When I came out to smoke he tried to stop me from going back in. I actually liked the place (old Badlands) and enjoyed the dance floor. I won't go back or recommend it with that kind of harassment.
Calling all Castro Clones!!! – Service - wretched (the bartenders - washed up college drop-outs working to pay rent on their trailers in Hayward -- with attitude...yes, with attitude. I don't get it. "No $1.00 tip for you!")
Atmosphere - Very cool, however, floors are really sticky and not enough room to move...Castro clones all over the place.
Food & Drinks - Drinks are not that great, but don't worry, by the time you get away from the bar to drink it, it's half gone anyway due to the 300 "clones" plowing over you.
Value - I think I'd rather have a lobotomy.
Overall - I repeat, I'd rather have a lobotomy.
never again – It's crowded. The music stinks. There are long lines for drinks. Skip it.
Badlands not so bad – Why all the negative comments about Badlands? Come on folks, times change, businesses come and go and change with the times. Obviously the new look is not going to please everyone...but it certainly seems to be drawing a crowd. If you don't like the type hanging out there just move on. When I dropped in the other night (a Thursday no less) it seemed like everyone there was having a great time. The dance floor was packed, great music was playing and most folks seemed very friendly and outgoing. Drinks were generous and the bar tenders really easy on the eyes! I loved it and so did the group i was with. We'll go back anytime.
