John's simply cannot be improved. The whole experience -- the dingy room, the camped-out South Philly locals, the dripping pork and soaked bread, the plastic forks and Styrofoam juice cups and bottle of Schmidt's -- deserves to be enshrined in the Smithsonian.

Sure the line can be confusing and the hours are erratic but the cheesesteaks and roast pork sandwiches at this South Philly spot cannot be beat. Extra long hots, please

The hours make this place a hurdle to get to, but it's worth it. A great feel of South Philly when waiting in line for a roast pork.

There is a little bit of figuring out of how the lines work here, but everyone is really nice and the sandwiches are good, too. If you don't eat meat, there's a grilled cheese option!

Plenty of hype surrounding John's, but I think it lives up to it. Plus, they're really nice there, not rude-on-purpose lamewads like some other famous steak places...

When you're in South Philly, you must stop at John's. The roast pork is one of the best I've ever had. Perfect seasoning but it doesn't overdo the pork. It's moist, juicy and travels well if you want to take one to go. Quick since the pork is already made but be prepared to wait in a long line during lunch. It's worth it!

Not very good!!! – The staff was a bit coarse, but nice. As for the food, not only was the roll stale, but they have the audacity to serve lunchmeat roast pork!!! The overpriced long hot pepper was drenched in low grade oil. I decided to give John's another chance, only because Georges Roast Pork on 9th. & Christian was closed on Monday. i am writing this review only after having the same experience a few times over the years. All in all, I say skip John's and go to George's on 9th.

I had seen a review on this place on tv so I figured that I would try the experience for myself. Now the review I had heard was soft delicious roll, flavors burst in your mouth, just the perfect amount of cheese, you can't eat just one.

Well I can tell you fro my experience that this was undeniable the WORST cheesesteak I have ever had. The only thing that was good was the roll.

Their was no seasoning on the steak not even salt or pepper. I asked for fried long hot and I got it cold on the side. This cheesesteak had absolutely no taste. The oil that they fried with had not taste and the cheese was the flatest american cheese I have ever had.

I would never recommend this to anyone. We actually left their hungry. NEVER AGAIN. Not even if you paid me.

pretty good i guess – We went one day when we had an extended lunch break, because this place is never open. Read lots of reviews and this place came highly recommended. My friend and I were so hungry we decided to split a roast pork sandwich while waiting in line for the cheesesteak. The roast pork is absolutely incredible. I have nothing bad to say about it. As far as the cheesesteak, it was ok. I might have been bias after eating the roast pork first, but it was a bit of a letdown. It is pretty big and well priced, but I didn't really feel like I was eating something that deserved all this hype. But the roast pork is sensational.

John's Best Cheesesteak in Philly – This is the place the local Philly people go that know good sandwiches. The cheesesteak, Italian pork and beef are the best sandwiches in town. If you are a tourist you can go see drunks and uniformed tourists at Pats and Geno's eating terrible quailty sandwiches because of hype and reputations that have long since past. Take a quick look, snap your pictures, and then get to John's to eat the best cheesesteak in Philly.

Superior pig sandwiches at this roadside attraction. – In Short
John's opens at the crack of dawn to service the waterfront's working people, offering all manner of egg and meat sandwiches. The real magic happens at lunchtime: The namesake roast pork sandwich is juicy and peppery, sliced thin and served on a Kaiser roll with sharp prvolone, gravy soaking the roll. The cheese steak is nothing to sniff at, with a seeded roll crisply encasing perfectly seasoned beef and American cheese.

Meat Man – In 8+yrs visiting John's I've never had a cheesesteak there. The Italian roast pork sandwich is second to NONE!! Tony Luke"s should be this good . Come early, cause when the bread runs out, shop's closed.(by 2-3pm)Health food it aint, but should not be missed.
