Excellent food, but a small space, come early and you can usually find a spot at the bar.

One of my favorite SF dining experiences, this cozy Castro restaurant tucked down a residential street dishes gorgeous food at a surprisingly affordable price point. Thoughtful service matches thoughtful touches--light drinkers will love the $3 "Market Shot" mini-cocktail & the pour-your-own carafes of house wine for a dollar an ounce.

It's so nice when a place over-delivers on the hype. Chef-owner Melissa Perello hits the perfect pitch with this restaurant: the food is beautifully prepared and seasoned, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, the service is on-point, and even the price is right. Try walking in if you can't score a reso.

Out of this world amazing. – The food here is def worth the two and a half month wait. Everything I ordered was perfect. The portions were right, the decor was nice. I had a great time there. Can not wait to come back.

Citysearch Editorial Review – Quaint is an overused, often abused word that’s put in Craigslist ads for unlivably small, dank studio apartments, but its purest definition evokes feelings of warmth, charisma and intimacy, all appropriate descriptors for this truly quaint Castro destination. Owner and Chef Melissa Perello, who earned a Michelin star for her work at the Fifth Floor a few years back and a James Beard nomination just a month or so after opening Frances, can be seen in the kitchen almost every night, preparing dishes that define San Francisco eating at its best: handmade gnocchi filled with ricotta and tossed in a morel mushroom ragout with green garlic and English peas, grilled calamari over a bean salad that could give even the pickiest palates a lifelong octopus fetish, and simple, well-executed entrees like Watson Farm spring lamb, cooked to perfection and served alongside seasonal, locally produced vegetables. But, while the food, service and ambiance all might add up to a quintessential San Francisco dining experience, the prices do not; Frances undoubtedly offers the best bargain in town for food of this caliber. It’s the kind of meal you’ll remember not just the next morning but a week and a month and probably even a year later, and the kind of place you’ll excitedly wait another month to get into again—and won’t even complain one bit about your 10pm weekday reservation.
