2005, our 12.5 yr old golden retriever was diagnosed with lymphoma. We caught it in its earliest stage. Went to Dr. Juglum....she prescribed an 8 week chemo treatment......well the first three weeks were fine....no effects, our boy was back to normal. I should say he was quite active, still running agility...he was an athlete! When it came to the fourth treatment the dr. First tested his immune system.....it was slightly low....she administered the fourth treatment anyway......he was fine for 6 days...then on day 7 he acted drunk. We spent $7K in 24 hrs to keep him alive.....but lost him. Basically, Jeglum wiped out his immune system wit the fourth treatment...she took a risk, without consulting with us as we waited in the next room......if his immune system was already low, she should have advised us and let us make the decision on the treatment...or advise to wait and give supplements to boost before giving that drug. There is no excuse for taking that decision away from us and gambling with his life....he lost, you didn't....my advise.....if you find yourself at this place for oncology treatment....make sure every single thing they want to do to your dog is approved by you before they touch your dog......make sure they thoroughly explain what they are about to do, what could happen, how to boost the immune system, and ask questions and demand answers before every action taken....if you are not prepared to do this.....don't get treated by Jeglum, ever.
Bad Experience – I had a very bad experience with my dog there last year and I was just checking to see if others have reported similar instances. I can see that others have, and I appreciate that you are taking the time to report your disatisfaction as well.
We took our dog there for chemo after 4 weeks, unfortunaly our dog lost this battle. WE drove out immedialty to be with our dog during his passing. My husband rushed home to work and we drove nearly two hours to make it. The facility was awful. We had to deal with loud environment, and Dr Juglum was anxious to leave for the day. During our final moments with the dog we were asked to attend to the bill. I could not believe that they could not wait. It was so insensitiive. it was not the way I had imagined my final moments would be with my beloved pet.
One of several other incidents occured during my time there...
DR Jeglum forgot about an appointment I had with her and showed up 2 hours late. What was truly reprehesible was the staff trying to misdirect blame to me..stating it must be my mistake. Dr Jeglum was not aplogietic. I drove over 2 hours to go to this specialist and am so sorry I did. The staff was just as unconcerned as the doctor.
This adding insult to injury to the terrible loss. I feel that I somehow did an injustice to my pet by bringing her there. I do not feel confident in light of other complaints that I did right by my dog. It Still Haunts Me To This Day
Veterinary Oncolgy Clinic – In April 2006 our four and a half year old Golden Retriever, Holly, lost her appetite and about 20 pounds before we took her to our local vet. Following an Xray session she was diagnosed with anaplastic sarcoma and cancer of the spleen and given less than 30 days to live.
A week later, we bumped into a neighbor at a social event whose Golden was being treated for cancer by Dr Jeglum and who spoke highly of the clinic's work. Three days later we visited the clinic with Holly in tow and were advised by Dr Jeglum that her spleen was about to bleed out and we should leave her overnight for emergency surgery. An action plan to deal with the various cancers would be developed following a successful spleenectomy.
The surgeon removed her spleen and confirmed that Holly was still riddled with cancer. Over the course of the next six months Holly also developed lymphoma and a brain malady. Dr Jeglum and her team prescribed at least four different protocols (dealing with each different cancer) over a nine month period.
It was NOT an inexpensive process but we gladly paid for the joy of extending our time with Holly even if it would only buy us another two years or so.
Today (4/7/2011) we took Holly in for her six month checkup and she continues to be in remission. It has been nearly five years since we began this ordeal with our beloved pet and we remain profoundly grateful for the excellent treatment and care Dr J and her team provided in extending our time with our "puppy".
Awful experience...beware of Melissa Goodman DVM – While I have nothing against Dr. Jelgum, she is guilty harboring a disreputable business under her own business' roof called Veterinary Reproductive Services owned by Melissa Goodman DVM. Goodman was fired by her last employer by the way. Goodman is supposed to be a reproduction specialist, but she failed me miserably and then had the nerve to charge me for a botched service anyway. Goodman is incompetent and a disgrace to her field of "expertise". I hired her for a simple semen collection and shipping fror a long-distance canine breeding. She did not follow the Synbiotics instructions for packaging with the company's Fresh Express semen kit and the semen warmed and died in shipment due to her negligent packaging. My entire breeding program was destroyed by her carelessness. I was encouraged to buy insurance for the shipment and the claim was denied by FedEx due to improper packaging. To ad insult to injury, I was still charged for Goodman's bungled "services". I contested the charge and she went after the stud dog owner and charged his card too. Double charging clients to assure getting money. Goodman is a remorseless & greedy sub-human with no business ethics. She has been reported to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association several times already. After my experience with her, I wouldn't let Dr. Goodman trim my dog's nails much less do anything more involved. Avoid!
These guys rock. My 13 year old cat 'Jill' has lymph node cancer. Jill is undergoing chemo and is doing fine. The staff has been nothing but helpful and supportive. Jill is a beloved family member, and I hate cancer. This is not your usual Vet hospital. They are the people to see if your pet has cancer.
SERIOUS NEGLIGENCE – At all costs, take your dog or cat elsewhere! Dr. Jeglum charged me for services I later found out she did not do. She charged me for exams but didn't even look at my dog while having him in the back for long periods for a treatment and this allowed a large tumor to grow and greatly damage him. It is unthinkable that a so-called doctor could be so careless! It is written in her records that she didn't look WHILE she told me to my face that she did AND while she CHARGED ME for it REPEATEDLY. If this vet has harmed you too in any way, PLEASE report her to the veterinary licensing board at once. I have proof of all I am saying here and can't handle the idea that she is doing this to others. Additionally, she IS just as arrogant as everyone warned me. She should not touch anyone's animal. She didn't even take time to talk with me about him at all. Be warned! Please do your part and report this establishment to protect others.
So misunderstood...... – I see nothing wrong with this practice or the doctor. You just need to understand Dr. Jeglum. She is an amazing doctor. She has a dry sense of humor and is very "fast". I think people mis-interperet that. I witnessed her joking with other clients and being caring as well. She has so much to do, shes's constantly taking care of everyone, she is straight and to the point, but, if you have a question, just let her finish and ask. She answers questions, gives you hope and even personally gets on the phone with me. I was warned by so many people that she has no bed side manner etc....that's crap. She does her job and does it right thank god. What's more important? To me, it's my dog's recovery! I think people really misunderstand her and it's a shame. She was very nice to us and my little boy and they are taking wonderful care of him. I think it's more important to have the talent and experience that she has then to worry if she isn't hugging and kissing my dog. I just want her to save his life, which she is doing!
My little dog was just diagnosed with stage 4 lypmhoma at age 11 1/2 and our hearts our broken. But, in just a few days under Dr. Jeglums care, everything has improved. He was given an 80% remission! I couldn't be happier. The front desk girl and the techs were so sweet and understanding, including the clients that I met on my first visit. What looked grim, suddenly looked like hope. The doctor, the staff and the clients made me see it. I can't be more grateful.
Maybe the people that pass the bad judgements on this place and Dr. Jeglum just aren't understanding of different personalities and how to handle them. Believe me, nobody is more warm and fuzzy than me and I think everyone at Dr. Jeglums office is wonderful! Thank you for taking such great care of my baby.
As for the negative review below......
She is straight and to the point. What's wrong with that? I wouldn't want it sugar coated. She will tell you your options, but, she didn't treat us like that at all! She didn't lie or manipulate. She was offering you a little bit of time with your pet and not wanting to put it to sleep which other vets told me!
Poor to good is not excellent. You can't expect more? We went in there knowing that even if we had another month or two with our baby, that it was better than nothing. But, she was upfront and honest, but, she was kind and understanding about our concerns and feeling
Don't mean to sound harsh, but, that review was harsh on Dr. Jeglum and unfair.
AVOID THIS VETERINARY SERVICE, THEY ARE INCOMPETENT, RUDE LIARS – I recommend against using this oncologist based on the way she treated my pet and my family. We went to The Veterinary Oncology Service after our adored cat was diagnosed with cancer and Dr. Jeglum used our emotions against us. She came right out and told us that if we decided not to treat him with chemotherapy he would die a fast painful death. She conned us by telling us that "her" treatment would change his prognosis from poor to good. Two months and thousands of dollars, later the cancer returned. Sadly, it was growing the whole time they were taking our money, but everytime we pointed out the suspected lump, they denied it. We finally took him to University of Penn where they told us that the cancer had spread too far for treatment. We had no choice but to let our beautiful cat go last week.
OUR OPINION: Dr. Jeglum had no bedside manner, she was always rushing around and never really listened to us or our concerns. If we did ask her something she responded by "talking down" to us. Actually, she was rarely there and the practice was run by vets without oncology certifications. If I wanted a "regular vet" I wouldn't have gone to West Chester every three weeks and paid a small fortune. In the end losing the money wasn't even the issue, it was losing our poor little guy the way we did. I have since spoken to others who have had similiar experiences-Dr. Jeglum acts like she is the almighty healer and promises the world. Even though she acts like she is, SHE IS NOT THE ONLY VETERINARY ONCOLOGIST, SO PLEASE CHECK AROUND.
