Great Breakfast Joint – So maybe its not "brunch." Who cares, because they have the best French toast I have ever eaten. The subtle hint of orange takes this simple meal to a new level. The prices are more than reasonable and the busy dining area adds to the fun of dining in the lower Haight. My out of town parents always want to grab breakfast here. It is a keeper.
Brunch? What brunch? – I dont understand why people like this restaurant. It was so loud I could hardly hear the person next to me. It is rated high for brunch, but this was no brunch, it was select menu items that they server any day. The food was about as good as anyone could slap together blindfolded, so long as grease was an ingredient. I would not recommend this place to anyone, sorry. For the price and the long Sunday wait, totally not worth it. Should look up brunch in the dictionary, not just a meal you eat between breakfast and lunch... so much more to it than that. Terrible place. Sorry, but honest.
Cheap Eat Breakfast – Like most things you can find in San Francisco this had a "vegetarian" vibe. I got the biscuits and gravy but was dissapointed my S.O. loved them, he got the BIG BOY Breakfast great value liked everything except the Cornmeal Buttermilk Pancakes if you don't like the "corny" taste steer clear from this choice. Parking was fine but we went on a week day ATM machine outside the door in case you forgot to bring cash, service was very helpful and friendly. Coffee was STRONG Orange Juice was delicious.
Heaping helpings of home-style grub in cozy surroundings make this place a favorite stop for the hungry breakfast crowd. – The Scene
Kate's decor is classic Lower Haight funk, with psychedelic Mayan-inspired paintings and a retro WPA-style mural celebrating the industries of the lower 48 states. Gingham tablecloths and kitchen chairs only further the welcoming atmosphere, drawing throngs of diners seeking to satisfy their comfort-food jones.
Classic American fare is served up with mom-worthy style. Blanched Flarney Garney, conveniently explained on the menu as a cheese and egg sandwich, is quite a tasty mix, though asking for your eggs poached can be messy. Hush puppies with pooh (aka honey) butter are light, fluffy drops of cornmeal with a crispy, greaseless crust. Cornmeal pancakes with blueberries, bananas and warm lemon curd are a gritty, wholesome treat slathered with real maple syrup (and pooh butter on request). A healthier option is the fruit orgy: a huge plate of fresh-cut fruits in plain yogurt with honey and granola.
favorite neighborhood brunch – I go to Kate's Kitchen at least once a month. The service is always quick, the coffee is really good and the food is wonderful. It is a little bit of a tight squeeze, as the restaurant isn't very big, but it has more of a european flavor because of it. Then again, it is also quintessential american. It is bustling in there, but it helps you wake up on a tough weekend morning, as long as you're willing to brave the line. Be sure to try the Flanched Farney Garney... :-)
Good Food in the Hood! – Let hear it for large portions, good coffee and service a bit on the surly side. You don't go to Kate's Kitchen for the friendly service, you do go for the fabulous and filling eats. The Big Boy breakfast with 2 pancakes, bacon, sausage, two eggs and hash browns is a bargain. The corn pancakes topped with peaches and ginger devine, and the best corn beef hash anywhere (no wimpy pieces of corned beef, but big hunks of it). But expect a line on the weekends.
Casual & friendly in a funky part of SF – This is a great place to have a very casual, good Sat or Sun brunch. The French Toast O. is my favorite. It is orange spiced french toast, lots of diff fruit sliced up all over it, granola on top of that, and top it off with syrup.
