Another fine dining experience – We always enjoy our meal at the Blue Grotto. I ordered the cod, which I never do out, but I was thrilled at how it was cooked and the inovative way it was served. The vegetables there are never overcooked and I loved the snappy asparagus that came with the fish. The service is always attentive and the staff is always able to recommend a great wine from the ample wine list. I am a repeat customer!
Thank you very much for dining with us, and we appreciate you sharing your experience.
Good food , warm ambienance – Even amid the stiff competition of Italian restaurants on Federal Hill the Blue Grotto can hold its head high.
Recently under new ownership the atmosphere is open and warm, complete with fireplace and guitar music. The waitstaf was pleasant and efficient without being obtrusive. Th room was quiet enough so conversation was easy. There was quite a variety of diners from familes to us old folk. The food from appetizer to entree was great; desert looked wonderful but everyone was just too full to be able to enjoy any.
Presentation of food and drink was great. I highly recommend it. If you are anywhere near Providence a stop at the Blue Grotto is worth making.

just an hour from boston! – well today was a great road trip . four of us CSI fans from boston decided to venture "all the way to providence" to see william pedersen at a trinity rep matinee. we'd heard alot about the federal hill restaurant area and decided to try dinner there after the performance. a friend told us that the blue grotto was a long time neighborhood favorite so that's where we went. it was a great choice. the service was very attentive but not intrusive. our waiter sensed our relaxed pace . the starters were surprisingly generous. the gorgonzola polenta and salad portions were nearly meals unto them selves. and delicious too. the mussels were to die for. for dinner there was osso buco you could cut with a fork, gnocchi that were outsanding and the salmon was prepared with a very tasty pomegrenate sauce that was artfully presented. our fourth diner had the daily fish special which was a fantastic talapia. overall the quality was superb , the ingredients fresh and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming.. the dessert tray looked sinfully delicious but who had room! instead we relaxed with coffee and cappucino before "heading all the way back to boston" with smiles on our faces and a new favorite restaurant just an hour away.
Thank you for joining us for dinner, and thank you for making the trip from Boston to see us. We appreciate you taking time to share so many details for your experience.
The Place To Be – Under new management, this is the place to go to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or to treat yourself for any occasion for a dinner or lunch that is reasonably priced. The new owners will do what they can to make your visit more enjoyable. The new decor is handsome and relaxing, and the female soloist was as cute as her voice was crystal-clear.
The menu is Italian, and the portions are just right. My choice was chicken/ziti/broccolli, and the pasta was cooked to perfection. There were just enough seasonings without being overpowering. The desserts also have the appropriate amount of sweetness without being too much. My choice was the chocolate fudge cake drizzled with raspberry sauce. Yes, it was just as tasty as it sounds!
The wine selection is impressive as is the size of the restaurant. This place is perfect for any size party, function or meeting.
Take advantage of the valet parking, and look forward to a relaxing evening. The you can look forward to going back.
Thank you very much for dining with us, and thank you for taking the time to share so many details. We're glad the memory of our food was so vivid in your mind. We hope to see you again soon.
Incredible dining experience – With new management and a new menu, the Blue Grotto is truly an incredible dining experience. The atmopshere was beautiful, the entertainment was superb, and the food was impeccable! Perfect place to dine. We were not rushed at all, and felt we could enjoy our meal to the fullest. If you like to dine out this is defintiely the place to do it!

Old Friends, New Food! – It was at least 7 years ago when I happened upon the Blue Grotto in Providence during a business trip from Boston. Back then, it was a quick little place for a business lunch. So, when my friends suggested a trip to Providence for my partner's birthday, I was curious.
Apparently, the Blue Grotto has quite a bit of history in Providence... and it was great to experience this 'staple' restaurant with new/old friends.
Gone are the pink walls, thankfully. The new owners have freshened up the plaster walls with a creamy bisque color (reminiscent of tuscan walls), some new artwork for a more homey dining room (or rooms I should say), and a nice relaxed atmosphere.
The menu was phenomenal... there was something for everyone, from the chicken-ziti-brocolli to the cioppino (with mounds of scallops, prawns, mussels...) to the plentiful raviollies in a creamy garlic and mushroom sauce. Dare I say, I had the veal... yes, I know, not very correct.. but, never-the-less DELICUOUS!
Save room for dessert, because those are special too! Everything from a creamy fruit/cream/tart concoction (something 'anglaise') to a chocolate and rasberry tart, and of course, the traditional tira misu. It was especially nice to find that everything was done in-house, which is so rare these days. Even the coffee was perfect!
On top of that, they had live entertainment, with a superb vocalist!
I would highly recommend the Blue Grotto for special occassions... even if the occassion is just a nice night on the town, or dinner for two... or dinner for 60+ (they have private rooms for that too!).
It will be nice to see the restaurant grow and change with the new owners. Unlike some of the trendier restaurants that have opened up on Atwells Avenue, the Blue Grotto definitely has the right mix of old world charm, and new fusion taste to stick around for at least another 7-10 years (or more!).
Hopefully, it won't take me another 7 years for me to head south to Providence again!
Thank you very much for dining with us, we also appreciate the time you took to share so many details from your visit. The next time I am writing for an advertisement or writing copy points for a radio spot, I want you to do it for me! Thanks again, and we hope to see you soon.
AWFUL – Well I certainly would not recommend this place on a chilly night. The moment we walked into the restaurant we were told by the woman "standing gaurd" it was against policy to hold onto our coats. They must be checked. The dinner left a lot to be desired the veal was tough and the steaks looked like boiled kangeroo chops and tasted it like it too. The wait staff did all they could do to try to convince our dinner party it was in fact beef. Our waiter was rude the only nice part of the evening was our bus boy who always made sure our water glasses were full. This was key in washing down our horrific meal. I would not recommend this place to anyone interested in good meal.
I took over this restaurant in August of 2006, and I assure you that there is no longer a woman standing guard. We do not require our guests to check their coats, or require anything from our guests for that matter. I would love for you to look at our new website and menu at www.bluegrottorestaurant.com, hopefully it will be obvious how many things are different now than the last time you were here. We would love the opportunity to show you the "new" Blue Grotto.
Mixed Feelings – I've eaten here a couple of times and am still not convinced the food is worth the price. Neither is the environment. The first time, my friend and I were seated in a corner table that smelled as if they'd had a water leak over there. The meal was decent, but not excellent. The second time I dined at the Grotto, we had a better table and meal as well. Maybe I'm a little too hard on this place because I've eaten at other Fed Hill restaurants which I consider excellent. Just a note for any vegetarians, some dishes seem like they might be meat-free, but really have a touch of chicken broth (for example), so be sure to inquire about ingredients.
We can certainly fix your mixed feelings. I took over the restaurant in August of 2006, and have made many changes that you would be happy with. Also, my mother is a vegatarian, there are plenty of choices. All dishes that do not mention meat have no chicken stock in them at all. we hope to see you again.
Pretty good food - traditional – Very conservative traditional food - very tasty. Have tried three Federal hill resaurants since moving here and have been very pleased with all three. Grotto is pricey but nice to take your parents to or grandparents to. Not a hot spot for the younger crowd or a date for a younger couple. Heavy, buttery, thick, but very tasty.
But you would love us even more now. Prices here are still below when I took over in August of 2006, and we have plenty of traditional and creative italian food. We hope to see you again.
