Comprehensive selection of tequilas, outranked only recently by newcomers Tacolicious.

Skip the food, go for the margaritas. You can get a serious education in tequila here.

Tommy's knows tequila. Their impressive collection draws in the crowds. Don't skip the signature margarita. Family run since 1965

Decent margharita's.  The food is fairly ordinary.  However, the portions are really gigantic.  The atmosphere is relaxed while still quite loud/lively.  The staff is nice.  If you just want a place to drink, have decent Mexican food, and hang out at with friends, than this is a great place to go.  Plus, it's one of the Richmond's longstanding jewels.  So, if you want to support the neighborhood while having fun with friends, then this is a nice place to visit.

Slop – This place has the worst food I've eaten in San Francisco, bar none--overcooked, tasteless slop. Unfriendly, non-English-speaking waiters who couldn't get an order right if they actually tried. Filthy interiors (sticky, nasty tables and dirty floors). Worst of all, the entire restaurant smells like a dirty bathroom (mostly because it does indeed sport filthy, smelly bathrooms). The bathroom odor hits you the moment you walk in the door.

Perhaps this is a good drinking place, but it most definitely is not a good eating place. After a few drinks, maybe the odors of urine and filth wafting through the restaurant no longer matter so much?

There are SO many better choices for good Mexican food in the city than this--almost any place in the mission, actually.

As a non-drinker, this place has absolutely nothing to recommend it. Avoid at all costs.

Tequila PhD it is – Tommy's has a tequila education and tasting program called the tequila PhD--and with their selection, quality, and knowledge, they HAVE the right to administer this degree! Oh yeah...and I hold the degree :)

The owner's predilection for El Tesoro is justified. Hacienda de los Diaz, 1800, and Herradura are also amazing--have a shot of each with your meal, and a margarita with whatever's in the well.

The food is very good; the tequila-culture gets this place five stars, and absolutely excellent food would earn it a sixth (if that rating could be given), but...again, the food is quite good.

Great if you are already drunk or have no self respect. – Let me preface this review by stating that they do have the best margaritas in the neighborhood, their well tequila would be considered top shelf elsewhere, and their cocktails are better than most neighborhood restaurants. And that?s where all the accolades end. Last Friday, I had a small holiday retirement dinner at Tommy?s, and was only seated when my entire party arrived. I totally understand that policy, but feel that the bar would have accrued a larger tab if we were seated promptly. The establishment has a weird greasy odor and their restrooms also need a good scrub down, it looked like someone had explosive bowels and had a need to make cave paintings all over the walls. The wait staff were very courteous and hospitable, however; the owner was extremely rude, refusing to split the check for some of our party who had to make an early departure. Tommy came to take our order after appetizers and cocktails only to be disgusted when some of our party decided to split meals. During service, Tommy wore his distain on his sleeve; speaking in Spanish (which to his dismay we all understood,) to his wait staff on how displeased he was because my party was taking a picture. Not even ten minutes elapsed before he attempted to clear the plate of my friend who was out side with a phone call. A member of my party attempted to talk to him, but he didn?t seem to care. It is safe to say that I will not pay patronage to Tommy?s ever; there are other places to drink, eat, and be marry.

BEST MARGARITA PERIOD – Stepping into Tommy's Mexican restaurant is like stepping into a Robert Rodriguez film. You feel that at any moment a gun slinging buckaroo is going to mosey on in and say, "I have traveled a hundred miles for the best tequilas in the world, and you're gonna give it to me"

If the too-many-too count tequilas don't get you, then the margaritas certainley will. You then have no choice of succumbing to the ultra-delicious homemade food , but that's life.

Authentic – Tommy's is an acquired taste. If you don't have that level of taste, you just don't get it. That's okay, more room for those of us who do. This restaurant is run by a family who has put their heart and soul into it over four decades. If you want a trendy, snooty place, this is not it. If you want a place that takes care of you and the less fortunate in their neighborhood and worships across the street at St. Monica's, come on in! It is a San Francisco institution and has the best tequila bar and best family running it. A real "work seven days a week and give your kids a better life" kind of ethic. That is what you need to be able to appreciate while you are having authentic food from the Yucatan and the best tequila anywhere.

Don't bother – When I was in San Francisco recently, my friend and I decided to visit Tommy's because of the good reviews that we had seen online. Our experience did not live up to the reviews. While the margaritas were good, the food was average. I've had better in Ohio. The waiter was less than friendly. He didn't make eye contact or attempt to be nice. He acted like he just wanted us out of there as quickly as possible. The worst experience came when we were leaving and asked for a cab. Tommy's refused to call a cab for us or to let us use their phone to call a cab. My friend and I had to walk several blocks, in the rain, to another establishment, where they called a cab for us after they heard how Tommy's had treated us. Evidently we were not the first persons this had happened to either. I would not recommend this place, unless you only want drinks and have your own car.

best margarita in the city – I love their margarita, after drinking there, i don't want to have margarita anywhere else. With fresh squuezed lime juice, good quality tequila, it can't go wrong. Food is great too, i had the special seafood dish, the fish was slightly charred to get it the flavor, inside is nice and moist.

Not muy bueno... – I concur with the review before mine. I honestly don't know how this place has such a high rating. It may have been tasty before, but I wouldn't know because I've never been. All I know is that I love Mexican food, and after hearing a lot about this place, I finally made it there. What a disappointment it was. It was really crowded which is fine, but it looked like an apt. (low ceilings and all), that had all its walls knocked down and was (poorly) converted into a dining establishment. The cash register was right at the front door, which coincidentally was were the kitchen was. So the waiters had to walk past the people waiting to be seated, all while balancing the dishes of hot food. That grossed me out, I don't need my food to be paraded around all of those people; hair can fall, people can sneeze (you get the point). Aside from that, the tables were crowded, it was SUPER loud, the floors were incredibly dirty, and the waiters (although nice to me), couldn't for the life of them get my order right so after repeating myself a few times, I said forget it, and decided to let him order whatever the heck it was he thought I had ordered.

One margarita, one water, 2 enchilada plates and one taco ala carte later, the bill totaled about $60. Say what? Exactly? Ridiculous.

Apparently the best things on the menu are the chips and salsa and the margaritas. Basically it's not worth it. Enter (and dine) at your own risk.

P.S. This was not what I call Mexican food.

worst dining experience in SF EVER – How this restaurant has garnered 9.3 rating with all of the bad reviews on this page must be a glitch in the system. Our waiter (we think he was Tommy) was miffed when we didn't want a pitcher of margueritas but rather 2 glasses instead. Our next waiter refused to talk to us in English (which I know he can speak due to an earlier visit). When the first waiter returned, he replied to a simple request by saying "OK, but the cook is gonna be angry". Angry? For a simple request about the salsa? On the side? When we told him fine, we'll just take our check for the drinks, he threw our menus on the next table. When I asked him why he was being so rude to us, he just laughed and stomped off. Enter this place cautiously....it smells, and the service stinks.
