Some pho spots only have the standard chicken or beef, but I like that La Vie offers other options like seafood. It's a great cure for the cold-weather blues.

Fantastic Vietnamese Restaurant; a diamond in the rough! – We know Asian menus & this is better than great! There was only one area not totally impressive & that was the Pho, altho it was better than most Vietnamese restaurants offer.

The lotus salad is the best ever let me assure you & will bring us back every time we're in the Bay area. The croquettes as an appetizer are a wonderful start & with the selections on this vast menu you'll find a fit for even the "pickiest" diner. The platings are in themselves decadent & the marriage of asian flavors a taste delight for the palate; novice or expert! A special word regarding the dessert offering of sticky rice. The term brings to mind the well known Thai version but this is a cut above; for the eyes as well as the taste buds! It's super Asian cuisine at a very affordable cost for the "working person".

Try it for yourself & you'll understand why we were so impressed & why the Richmond neighborhood is truly fortunate to have this restaurant.

Exquisite meals, Affordable prices, Friendly staff – I've lived in San Francisco's Richmond district for several years, and La Vie is by far one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Home to an array of Vietnamese/French fusion cuisines and a Hot & Sour soup that is simply to die for, La Vie produces high-class plates at prices that are affordable to the average restaurant-goer. Beyond this, the staff is always friendly and keep customers well attended to.

A few of my personal favorites:
--Hot and Sour soup (available with catfish, prawns, or both)
--Vegetarian Salad (has little crispy tofu strips, and the dressing is awe-inspiring to say the least)
--Dungeoness Crab (large enough to feed several, with a good handful of recipes. I've tried them all and have never been let down.)

Highly recommended!

Rude Rude Service – We walked in for lunch during the weekend. I wanted to try La Vie because I've heard good things about the food. The place was empty. However, when we walked in, the disgruntled waitstaff saw us, but did not want to stop reading his newspaper to show us a table or address us. We waited for a minute or two and then left. If the waitstaff is that disgruntled in the front of the restaurant, I wonder what is going on in the back. I rarely will comment about rude service, normally commenting on the food, but when it's this bad, it's inexcusable.

Best |Crab on Geary Blvd. – Wow!! What a treat the Garlic Crab and noodles were as well as the Coconut Prawns ........................ MMMMMM .Parking was not too bad (about 15 minutes). We were seated in about 10 minutes. Restaraunt 1/2 full when we arrived. Nice mellow ambience with romantic lighting. Service was GREAT even with the busy crowd. Noticed regulars and new people the night we were there. Waiter was very helpful with selection. This was a differnt kind of cuisine. Nice and differnt. Fried Ice Cream very tasty and Mango Pudding a TREAT! We will definately be back ! 5 STARS

BEWARE OF THE OVER PRICED CRAB !!!! – I read about this place on citysearch and how good the garlic crab was. After driving out to the avenues and spending about 10 minutes looking for parking we arrived at La Vie early. We were seated promptly. It is a small, simple restaurant. The first thing that we noticed was how poor the lighting was. My dad did not have his reading glasses and we both struggled to read the menu because the lighting was so poor. Of course, I ordered the garlic butter crab, eggplant , catfish in the claypot and the fried eggroll type appatizer. Our waiter was nice but he didn't explain how much the crab was. There was no price on the menu and we didn't ask so in some ways it was our fault. We would have never order the crab for $48 !!!!!! Way over priced !!! Our appatizer was good but our waiter could have told us that we were supposed to wrap the eggrole in the lettuce, mint and noodles it came with. We realized we ate it wrong after we saw another table eating the same appatizer. Our outragously overpriced crabe came. We cracked, picked and scraped the small pieces of crab out of the shell. This crab was nothing special it was steamed with melted butter and garlic poured over it. It was served with a small amount of noodles that were tasty. The eggplant in the curry sause good, the sause was tasty, creamy and full of unique flavors. The catfish in the claypot was good but some pieces of the catfish seemed a little "fishy" but both were good over the steamed rice. Overall, the restaurant was good just be aware of how much the crab is if you order it.

Richmond favorite – Roasted garlic crab is terrific, as is the lemongrass chicken appetizer which is cooked at the table. The service is very good--polite, eager to help w/ the menu. We've been here several times and have not been disappointed--the typical fare (noodles, claypot fish) is very good, and the crab as I said was excellent. They only have the local crab for two more weeks (till mid-April) before they have to bring it in from the northwest.

Exquisite Vietnamese Cuisine !!! – After hearing high praises about "La Vie", we gave it a try today. The first impression right after entering the place is the detailed decoration and atmosphere, which gives warm, relaxing feeling. This is an excellent place for a private or romantic dinner date. The Vietnamese dishes served here are refined, meticulously prepared unlike most ordinary Viet restaurants in the city. I highly recommend "La Vie" s Roasted Garlic Crab. Watching the friendly waiter take out the live crab from the seafood tank and tasting the aromatic, sweet, delicious, savory crab is wondrous. We also tried the Pork Belly and Coconut, a Vietnamase pork saute'd to perfection combined with the buttery taste of coconut and Vietnamese spices. There is also an extensive wine list to match the dishes. The waiters are very formally dressed, courteous and attentive. We had a very plesant experience. In fact, our friends agreed to come back here next weekend for our dinner gathering, as there are many more dishes in the menu that we would love to try. We give "La Vie" a 10 !!!

Slanted Door quality without the hassle, wait, and pretension – There are a number of affordable Vietnamese restaurants in the increasingly interesting Richmond District, most of which are on Clement St. However, the best of these is La Vie, which is on Geary @ 22nd. The quality of the food rivals that of The Slanted Door, though La Vie can't match SD in location or in menu diversity. Still, the food is always fantastic. The flavors pop more than its nearby competators, and the service is warm and efficient. They have the best vegetable spring rolls west of Divisadero, and they serve Singha. My only complaint would be the availability of "bun" for dinner.

Great French Vietnamese – We have been to this restaurant a few times. Everytime we go, we get great service, good food. The roasted crab is delicious. The flaming beef is also a winner. Try the garlic eggplant is a crowd pleaser. The family that runs the restaurant is very kind and welcoming. Highly recommended!
