excellent hole in the wall – this is the type of local joint that has regulars - real regulars - and most of them are real characters. pete, the owner, qualifies as a character as well, and you just might catch him yelling at a delivery boy, waxing philosophical about his gambling antics or some other facet of life, and believe me there are no censors making sure that you, the customer, will not be offended.
that said, if you can deal with some mild (?) cursing, don't mind new york yankees and giants fans, and want to get your hands on some down and dirty breakfast - and suprisingly fantastic italian home cooking lunch - then gesualdi's is a place you need to visit. breakfast is more traditional eggs and toast fare - greasy spoon if you will - but it's always good. italian ingredients work their way into things on occasion here - roasted peppers, italian sausage, etc. and if you ask for something that's not on the menu and they have it - they'll make it for you. lunch is fantastic, and the prices are fantastic. real italian-american fare - standards like pasta and beans or escarole soup, rhode island chowder, veal and mushrooms, etc. etc. and there's always some type of fish - salmon, grilled tuna, swordfish, scallops - and the prices always stay under $10. it's like being able to stop by your grandmothers house for lunch. it's always full for lunch, but amazingly there always seems to be just the right number of seats available to get a table. (of which there are about five.) they close at 2 every day except friday, so don't be late.
