Stay away – Bought a pair of shoes there and the service was terrible and they would not take shoes back next day with the receipt. Would never go there again. Friends of mine also had problems.
Best shoe store I've ever been to! – it is very hard for me to find comfortable shoes. I broke my foot when I was 26 y.o. and it's never been the same. I need a 9 1/2 -10 extra wide. The sales clerk told me he had been fitting shoes for 40 years. He showed exactly what would fit my feet. I needed some heels for a wedding and he found some for me that were so comfortable, I wore them all day long.
Great Service, Great Selection, Caring Staff – I have been to Yorker shoes twice and had great experiences both times. My mother has been going there for years, and I decided to give it a try myself - I am a young woman with "old woman feet." - hereditary issues that make my feet and ankles swell have always made cute shoes an impossibility.
On my first visit, the salesperson spent the better part of an hour with me. He put me at ease immediately - my ankle and feet issues were not a big deal; they've seen everything there. I just told him my problems and gave him a long list of likes and dislikes and he took me around the store offering suggestions before disappearing into the stock room and coming out with various sizes and widths and styles. I came away with two pairs of sandals (I've not worn open toed shoes to work in YEARS due to my foot issues) and a sale pair of open back shoes I found myself in the sale area.
On my second visit, I actually returned one of the pairs of sandals I had purchased six weeks earlier. In my excitement to find sandals that were this comfortable, I’d purchased two very similar pairs and only worn one. I had no receipt, and made no mention of when I’d purchased them, but the salesperson (a different one this time) simply checked to see that they had not been worn, and said “no problem; I can give you a credit or help you find something else.”
Again, I issued a tall order for what I needed – a sneaker-like shoe I could use during my commute running for trains; shoes I could throw on at the end of the work day and dash out the door, and of course it had to be kind to my expanding feet and ankles. And again, the salesperson took me around the store offering suggestions for shoes that met my criteria. (And by the way, on both visits, they measured my feet – both of them, length and width. They’re not simply going to take your word for what size would fit you best.)
I ended up with a pair of mocks after trying on several pair on both women’s and men’s sizes to see which fit best, all at the salesperson’s suggestion. I exchanged the shoes I’d brought in with me, and was credited over $30.00 back to my credit card – not just issued a store credit.
Obviously, I am not accustom to this kind of customer service, otherwise I would not have taken the time to type all this out. I can pretty much guarantee that the reviewer below who claims to have been treated rudely is either exaggerating, or was simply being treated in kind with his own behavior. And the reviewer who ended up with the “wrong” width shoes (again – they measure your feet!) should have brought them back. I was told both times to wear the shoes around my house and bring them back if I was not happy.
The prices at Yorker shoes are not low (except maybe the self-service clearance area – which aren’t really self service since the salespeople will peruse that with you, too.) If you are easy to fit, or don’t have “bad feet” and can buy shoes off the shelf at a discount department store, you likely won’t be happy with what will seem like hovering salespeople and a pricey selection.
But if you’re like me and have problems with your feet or legs (or even lower back – it could be your shoes, you know) then you’ll be thrilled with Yorker shoes. Especially if (also like me) you are a young person with foot issues that plague older people. It’s so nice to be able to shop somewhere where they understand, you don’t have to feel embarrassed, and you can finally wear cute (not orthopedic-looking) shoes.
Poor choice – On Saturday I went to Yorker Shoes for the 3rd time. My first experience was good so I again drove 1.5 hours to the store. My experience is that Yorker Shoes did not have size 9AAA except in black or unattractive brands such as Munroe and SAS. My last two trips were for nothing. I know that brands such as Trotter, Naturalize, Rosmond have attractive shoes in various colors but Yorker does not carry these shoes in AAA. I went to Yorker to avoid mail ordering my shoes. I perfer to frequent local shops, however Yorker isn't worth the drive so mail order is the only way I will be able to get shoes. In addition the men who waited on me were arrogant to the point of being rude.
poor customer service – A couple of years ago, I had stopped in to buy a pair of sneakers on my way to the airport, as we were leaving for our honeymoon. I had tried on two pairs and I really liked one specific pair. I wanted to try on another 1/2 size larger or smaller, as the arch didn't feel quite right. I said to the salesman, "I'm not sure why, but these don't feel quite right. I'd..." Then the salesman chimed in "Well, then don't buy them." We had a flight to catch so I just bought the $100 sneakers. I have never gone back. This person was rude and not helpful in anyway. He really had no knowlege of what he was doing.
bad experience – The worst shoe store ever. Gave me a 9 wide when I asked for a 9 medium, I didn't realize until I wore the shoes to work. My foot wobbled they were so wide. The store would not return them even though they gave me the wrong size. They cost 126.00. The owner, was rude and condescending.
