wonderful italian food – My friends and I were in Charleston to celebrate our birthdays, and started our celebration by eating at Il Cortile del Re. We don't say "wow" to a lot of restaurants (we are sort of food snobs) but we have nothing else to say about the food at this restaurant. Everything we had was superior. My friends had the special (Ahi Tuna) that evening and raved about it; I had porcini mushroom ravioli which were absolutely superb. We split an antipasto plate and a serving of lamb sausage for appetizers and had tiramisu for dessert. I cannot say enough good things about the food- there was nothing that was even average, and the wines to complement the food were wonderful as well. Our one quibble was with the service; our waiter did leave something to be desired. He was not as personable or professional as the rest of our experience would have led us to expect, and was really almost cold to our table. Nevertheless, I would happily make reservations here again and again, and would recommend it without reservation to anyone!
Editorial Review – Provincial-styled bistro serves traditional Italian cuisine as well as hard-to-find international cheeses and an extensive wine list.
Great People – Every friday night for a year you could find my wife and I at table six. Yhe soups are to die for the meat is the best i've had in my 50 plus yeas my wife still claims that the osso buco is the best she has ever had. We ware fortuunate to eat part of the year in Palm Beach, Boston, and Charleston. Charleston has many good restaurants and more than their share of great ones.
A spectacular ristorante – I recently moved here from NY and found it nearly impossible to find ANY good italian food in the low country. Then I stumbled upon Il Cortile Del Re and was more than pleasantly surprised. It has the warm atmosphere of a small restaurant in Little Italy or of course Tuscanny itself in a dimly let setting. The menu is limited to just a dozen or so entrees but has something for everyone. And their sauces are bursting with flavor.
Whenever I have family or friends come to visit I ALWAYS take them there. I recommend it highly.
Snooty owner food poor – If you like a snooty owner and a fairly overpriced menue with moderate to poor food come to this place. Lamb looked like it was cooked for 5 days straight but the duck was raw. Owner said we cant sit outside because the tables were booked but the three tables that were empty remain so.
Great Italian, disappointing service – Our second experience at this great Italian Restauarant. The outside seating is great, inside as well as outside is romatic. The fact that it has been enlarged over the last few years is something of a loss to its previous european flavor, but still greta. Food is excellent, portions tend to be somewhat small. The wild Boar was mostly gravy with very few and very small pieces of meat.
Service can be somewhat iffy; our waiter was an absolute beginner, should have been working at a fast food place, not here.
Most romantic restaurant in town? – We researched several restaurants in downtown Charleston, and Il Cortile Del Re has got to be in the running for most romantic dining spot. Tucked away on King Street, this treasure doesn't look like much from the outside (including the almost-too-casual restaurant signage), but the three dining rooms inside hold all the secrets.
We sat in the middle room with the Italian red walls at a tiny round table set for two. It was delightful. Wine was fabulous (try the Chardonnay/Riesling blend), food was tops, service was everything we wanted it to be. Despite it being a busy Monday night, we felt exclusive -- the restaurant simply has that kind of feel to it.
You can walk to this restaurant from the Market or East Bay area -- it's just a couple of blocks from Market Street on King.
Best restaurant in town! – Not only is this my birthday dinner every year, but any time my father (quality, quality, quality!) comes to town, this is our destination. I can't say anything but good things about Il Cortile del Re...except maybe be careful ordering the cheese plate if you're sitting too close to the fire--it was HOT last time and our cheese got a little mushy.
Cozy, Chic, Locals – I highly recommend Il Cortile! I have been several times with friends, and each experience has been wonderful. This place is definitely tucked away from the mainstream tourist traps, which makes it special. It has a neighborhood feel, and a big bar that always seems to be bustling, but not over crowded. The food is amazing, I have always loved whatever I have ordered. Great wines, cozy, warm atmosphere. I have yet to go when it has been warm outside but the courtyard looks like a fun place to dine during the warmer months...cannot wait to try it! Love Il Cortile!
Amazing Place – I am a student at the College of Charleston and this is one of the *wonderful* tucked away places that tourists never seem to find...considering tourism is the city's key source of income. The pasta with shrimp is fresh and FANtastic, the cheese selection is uncommon, and the service speaks with a thick accent. Nice patio for a low-key summer date. Try to make reservations!
