MTW is so much more than just a children's theatre.
I wish that every child could have the opportunity to sing, dance and act in one of Musical Theater Work's productions. This company, located at the Randall Museum, produces such wonderful shows, complete with live orchestra music, professional quality costumes and makeup. My three kids have all had the privilege of participating in classes and shows done by this amazing company. The directors, Carolyn and Christina, are dedicated, seasoned theater professionals who are respected, even revered, by the kids. Bring your kids to one of the main stage productions and see for yourself! You'll want to sign up too.
After having heard good things about this company for years, I finally took my kids to see one of their shows. It was a huge hit, and all three have subsequently participated in classes and shows at MTW. Not only have my kids gained self-confidence on stage, learned many new skills, but they have formed close bonds with fellow cast members from all over SF. The directors are extraordinarily talented and good with kids too. MTW offers classes for kids from K-8th grade and summer camps too. During the school year they are located at the Randall Museum. I can't recommend this theater company highly enough.
Character Building. MTW provides children who have a real drive towards performing an environment second to none. The training is intensive for good reason, it's truly a group effort to put on a show. The instructors give guidance in song and dance, theater history, costume, lighting, staging, props....... and to a professional level. I was overwhelmed by the level of experience the instructors could impart to my daughter, and their dedication to the craft. I highly recommend any aspiring song and dance "kid" to get involved, the experience can solidify a great path toward their goals. The classes are 1 to 2 days most weeks, toward the performance week it's more, but a scedual is provided months ahead, so you know what to expect. The rehearsals lead to a 4 day run of the show, which was amazing! Truly a great experience!
'REAL THEATRE' EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS.
MUSICAL THEATRE WORKS is a unique Theatre Academy and Performance Company for students in grades K-12. MTW offers an opportunity for students to learn about and experience all aspects of 'real theatre' taught by professional Directors, Designers and Instructors. The schedule for MTW is published early, but can be changed, as necessary, as the season progresses. Because not every student is in every scene, some students need to wait until their scene is being rehearsed. We endeavor to not call students to rehearsals unless they are needed. The time commitment for MTW can be considerable if the student is part of the Main Stage Performane Company which produces full-scale, full-length Broadway Musicals that take 4-5 months to prepare.
The casting is based on what each student brings to their audition and how well prepared they are. Our Directors offer suggestions and advice during the auditions so that the students can do the best possible job. As in 'real theatre', roles are assigned based on a student's experience level, their audition, their appropriateness for the character, and their potential to succeed in the role. Every student is cast in a specific role.
MTW is proud of the level of instruction that is offered and the broad spectrum of students that are attracted to the Company. With its considerable outreach program, MTW's diversity has grown and reached so many talented students throughout the Bay Area.
Nightmare -- amazingly ability to waste parents' time. The schedule with Musical Theatre Works is ever-changing. Kids are expected to wait around for hours until they're needed on stage. Some of the backstage help is extremely rude. I wouldn't ever do this again, nor recommend it to anyone!
Parents are informed, before enrolling, that the Main Stage Company is a huge commitment, but a full and rewarding experience teaching every aspect of 'real theatre'. The rehearsal schedules are carefully laid out so that the students have very little off-stage time; they are only called to rehearsal when needed. All students are cast in the shows and the ensembles provide an important and vital support to the production; they also have a huge amount of stage time in the shows.
