Simple, hearty Italian food – This restaurant is one of my favorites. The food is not gourmet, it's simple Italian food. My boyfriend and I love going there because it's a great experience. They have live music on the weekends for dinner which makes for a romantic night. One of the great things is the make your own pasta for about $6.95. You have a choice of the type of pasta you want and then the sauce. We love the Spaghetti a la Carbonara- it's hearty and delicious.>>>The decor is unique and it's fairly spacious. I've read the reviews of people who bashed this place, but i think they are dead-wrong. The servers are pleasant and helpful.>>> I like the ambiance the most, it's a great place to go on a Saturday night for dinner then a nice walk through the busy North Beach nightlife.>>> Bocce has a lot of characrter and is also great to take friends or better yet a date.

Unique garden setting, live music, good service, lots of good food – After dining there a couple of weeks ago I can't believe some of the bad reviews this place has rec'd from others on here. My wife and I loved it. The service was good. The garden setting is very unique (wait for an outside table under the big tree), the piano man was a bonus, and the food was very reasonably priced and very good. We started with the bruscetta (fantastic, fresh, mmmm) and then had the Italian sampler plate ($22) which consisted of several different pastas, lasagne, etc. It was WAY more food than the two of us could eat....and we both thought it was fantastic. We also had a bottle of chianti that was decent as well. We had a great dining experience for about $70 bucks (plus tip). Try getting that at a "tourist trap" at the wharf or pier 39. The entres alone would cost that much and wouldnt be as good. Bottom line: if you want world class food...go spend $200 bucks at a 4 star joint. If you want good food at a very fair price with very cool surroundings.... Cafe Bocce is the ticket! BTW...its in very close proximity to lots of good nightlife too!

Popular spot but not good food or service – I was disappointed in this place because first of all, the bread is sourdough which, while San Franciscan, is not Italian. Secondly, I ordered my favorite wine, a Reisling, only to take a sip and have it taste like Tequila (my friend agreed). Thirdly, the pasta was overcooked and the "spinach, olive oil, and garlic sauce" was nothing more than a bunch of spinach dumped over the overcooked pasta. Furthermore, the service was bad--After a while, I had to ask to have my water filled up and it was refilled--once. My glass remained empty throughout the rest of the meal. I was never asked why my wine went untouched, and was charged for it (though I didn't mention anything to the server). There are so many other fantastic Italian places in North Beach, you will be thankful to skip Bocce Cafe.

Decent Food for a great price – I will be honest, the food here is not gourmet, however it is tasty. You get lots of above average food, for a great price, in the most interesting neighborhood in town. The atmosphere is cozy, slightly romantic, and the overall feel of the place is laid back. This place is great for a large party that wants to go to an exciting part of town, in a nice but not swanky place, and eat decent food at a great price

great place for big groups – We had a large party for dinner & the service was great! The water was always being filled, the waiter got every order right, and they were very accommodating with all of our requests. There was live jazz playing in the background and the atomsphere was fabulous. I would highly recommend this place for large parties!

good, simple Northern Italian fare – It is simple Northern Italian fare - not intended to be too complex - but the quality is good and prices are reasonable. The best part of the restaurant is the location minimal tourists and it is excellent for large groups (which is rare in North Beach where most restaurants have tiny tables almost on top of one another. A number of the other reviews were not favorable, but I have always had good experiences.

eat at Home! – I have never had such horrible food! The pasta was the type that came out of the freezer section at a store....and the sauce was grainy and had no taste. Bocce has a beautiful space and great service, the owner needs to fire the cooking staff and start over! Stay at home and eat frozen pasta instead! That way you will not be disappointed with your meal out in north beach!

just blah – Yes the prices here are reasonable until you see what you get.

This is like a US Italian restaurant from the 70's. One type of red sauce, pasta isn't even boiled fresh. For one of the pasta dishes the pasta was dried out like it had been in a refridgerator for a couple of days.

Alternatives, buy some dry pasta and sauce in the jar from Safeway, or for a similar price go to one of the chain pasta places like Pasta Pomodore.

The crowd here was either big groups or out of towners.

Exceptional Value – This is a great place to eat. The food is slightly above average, but the atmosphere and the prices are way above. A bottle of wine, and appetizer, two entrees and two glasses of 20 year port and the bill came to $60. The waitstaff was friendly and there was a 3 piece jazz band playing dinner music. The decor really must be seen to be appreciated. I will definitely be coming back here!

don't go on a weekend, or ever – What Italian restaurant in SF supplies parmesan that comes out of a salt shaker? You guessed it: Bocce! Bocce earns the gold medal for being the worst Italian restaurant I have ever frequented. I initially went to Bocce for a dinner party on a weekday. Although the service wasn't bad, the food was mediocre, if that. I regretfully attended another dinner party at Bocce this time on the weekend only to find that the service was now terrible and the food managed to worsen. After the waiter hesitantly granted our request for fresh ground pepper I found a stick in my soup. The waiter took away my bowl only to return 20 minutes later to ask if there was anything else I wanted. The only redemable element of Bocce is its unique woodsy decor, it is a shame it's going to waste.
