Escape the bustle of North Beach and enter a perfect oasis where souffles sigh their way to your table and life is candle-lit. I lived on the same block as this place for many years, and not once did it fail to be amazing. A salad to start, a savory souffle of your own for a main, and a dessert souffle (or two?) to share for dessert. Magnifique!
poor service and average food – Our experience at Cafe Jacqueline was definitely below par. The food was average and overpriced. The service was HORRIFIC - waiters were absolutely rude not only to us but to a table adjacent from us. A woman requested to change her foldable chair (why is a foldable chair in a French restaurant anyways?!) and the waiter declined. Given that the restaurant was 3/4 empty at the time, we had no idea why he was so unaccomodating. She finally got her chair after complaining to the manager. I would tell all of my friends to absolutely not try this restaurant. I was warned about bad service but did not expect it to be that bad.
was treated poorly & kept waiting forever – I has a good experience last year. This year a horrible one. We went for a late, desert only, seating. We arrived at 945 and they said they'd get right on our desert souffles. we didnt leave until 1130. They didnt tell us things will take extra long, or seem to care. The server was new & very embarrassed as to the kind of non-answeres we'd get when we inquired. They do great souffles, but you may have to put up with alot of BS & attitude!
Souffle! – Very romantic spot, exquisite souffles and lots of charm. We make a point to visit Café Jacqueline every time we visit from Newport Beach.
Unique and charming spot! – Cafe Jacqueline is a delight! It's a charming little place that serves up consistently delicious souffles. Ideal for a special occasion or romantic date. Plus, I love the whole idea of a restaurant that focuses on one dish, yet can make so many tasty variations. It's a fun experience. Be sure to poke your head in the kitchen to see Jacqueline herself. Amazing souffles! – This place is run by a tiny old woman who makes all of the souffles. The souffles were light and airy and delicious for dinner. Our only regret was that the dessert souffle tasted very similar to the entree since it had the same texture. Plus, we expected chocolate sauce to ooze out, but it was an authentic chocolate souffle unlike the ones you can order in other new american restaurants.
An extraordinary culinary institution!! – It takes guts to develop one dish into the basis of your restaurant and Cafe Jacqueline not only succeeds, but creates the apotheosis of souffles. The flavors are extraordinary and the textures are perfect. The gran marnier dessert souffle can not be improved upon. This restaurant deserves a visit and a plaque to honor its proprietor. Don't miss it.

With white walls, soft classical music and delicate lighting, there's not much to distract diners from their dates in this spare storefront space. Attentive yet unobtrusive service encourages a quiet, anticipatory mood; the relaxed pace demanded by the souffles (which are made to order and cannot be rushed) allows the mood to develop in the right direction.
Chef-owner Jacqueline Margulis' menu is made up most entirely of souffles, though a few standard starters, such as hearty French onion soup and a lightly dressed baby spinach salad, grace the menu. But sharing light-as-air souffles is why this achingly romantic spot exists. Savory souffles are big enough to share, from the classical Gruyere cheese souffle to an innovative pairing of salmon and asparagus, or prosciutto and mushroom. For desserts, forgo the bittersweet-chocolate souffle and get the fresh strawberry souffle, lightly sweetened and bursting with flavor.
a timeless place for any date – I have been there so many times, and I've not get tired of coming back. It is a small, it is not pretty, but it is romantic. The service is really excellent. It take a long time to prepare each soufflet, and they pay attention to the details to server you right. They can't server a lot of customers every night, and they make sure everybody is enjoy their visits.
You can create your combination, and they will make it for you. Be brave, anf they are willing to experiment with you.
I got a lot of complements by making soufflet to server our friends, but it has never been as good as Jacqueline's.
Finding a parking place is always a painful thing for us. If you are visiting SF, call a taxi.
Great funky place! Food and all! – My third visit in just over a year. I love this small, funky restaurant with its quaint interior and candles on the table. The salad is fair, the onion soup is good, but its the souffles that puts this place on the map. All of the savory and sweet souffles are wonderful. She makes them as well as I do! :-)
My last dinner was leisurely, quiet (for a change), unrushed, and completely enjoyable. The chocolate souffle was a fine finish to an outstanding meal. Pricey? Well, it might be, but when you have this much fun, who cares? Getting to the restroom is a hoot: through the kitchen and out the back! I stopped momentarily to compliment Ms. Jacqueline in the best French I could remember from my college days. She laughed. :-)
not worth it – The prices are extremely high - which is OK if the food is outstanding. But it's not. They offer you souffles that are priced $40-45 on average, and the menu says 2 people can share. If you are really hungry, half won't be enough. Souffles look big, but they are not dense - they are very fluffy and airy. The desserts are another story. Seeing the $30 price tag on fruit souffles, we expected something spectacular (come on, where have you seen a 30 dollar dessert?). We ordered the peach souffle. What we ended up getting is a big plain souffle with nothing inside (except for eggs), some powdered sugar on top, and very thin fresh peach slices that doesn't even add up to a quarter of a peach. Phew!
I don't think I'm coming back here again (unless someone else is paying).
