Delcious Food, Chill atmosphere and Great Service – I ate at The House last night with a friend who was visiting from out of town. Everything was wonderful! We ordered the white shrimp and chive dumplings as a starter which was good. The waiter told us about the entree specials, one which was a dish with Kobe beef. I was not interested in the veggies and rice that accompanied it, so the waiter suggested that I order the warm wasabi house noodles dish and that he would switch out the angus flat iron for the kobe. Well, the dish was delicious and I was so pleased that the waiter had made this suggestion. We also got the seabass which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. For dessert we got the special which was a warmed peach and cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream... i left not a morsel in the bowl. I look forward to going back to the House and trying some more of their delightful dishes.
Some of the worst service I've ever experienced... – After reading the glowing reviews of this restaurant, my cousin and I decided to try it out. From the moment we walked in the door, the experience was downright terrible. The host was rude and unpleasant, despite discovering that the hostess the previous night had written down our reservation incorrectly and we were left without a decent table. After being seated directly in front of the swinging doors to the kitchen, we had to wait almost 20 minutes to have anyone come over to greet us, ask for our drink orders, or even acknowledge that we were there. When the waitress finally did appear, she was harried and patronizing. Completely inexcusable. The crowning moment came when we were waiting for our entrees and the kitchen doors swung open, revealing a worker inside who proceeded to make lewd gestures at us (a table of three women). Complaining to the manager only yielded a change of table, at which point we were ready to leave. The sad thing is that the food is actually quite good, tasty and reasonably priced. But the overall experience ruins it, and we will definitely never be going back.
Yum! – I've heard very good things about this place and it met all of my expectations. Their menu is very hard to choose from because everything sounds so good. They have great very unique specials and good wine list. The service was very friendly and although it's a tiny place it never feels cramped. I had the SeaBass which i heard was their house specialty, and it definitely was! Will be returning as soon as I can to try the rest of the tasty menu!
amazing food & customer service - will keep you coming back for more – I've walked by this restaurant & never thought to go in. I went with my boyfriend & another couple.
First off, the waiter was awesome! He was super friendly. The food was exceptional! We all ordered the special except my boyfriend who ordered the sashimi platter. The food melts in your mouth. I had the seabass topped with a california roll. Not only was it beautifully displayed but it was unbelievably delicious.
This has become oe of my favorite restaurants in North Beach.
Incredible food, one of the best for Asian fusion – By far my favorite restaurant in San Francisco and I'm a foodie so I try a lot of restaurants. Each time I visit The House, I fall in love with it again. I've gone in groups of 2 and 4, and key thing is to share so you can try all the different flavors. The chef's high point is that he creatively uses Asian sauces to highlight each dish so he'll use soy sauce or wasabi or plum sauce to give you a dish that you've never thought of before.
I won't get the exact names right but this is close: favorite appetizers are the lightly fried salmon roll and ahi tuna, best entrees include sea bass, pork, beef and the to-die-for dessert includes whatever is the daily and my favorite is the Scharffenberger chocolate cake with hazelnut ice cream and caramel drizzle. So incredibly good and rich - you have to really like dark chocolate but it's delicious!
When in doubt, always ask the staff. They know the menu well and give good guidance for those who are new to Asian cuisine. I grew up on Asian food so I'm an adventurous eater but there's something on the menu for everyone!
It's a small space so make reservations!
Expect great food, Don't even expect average service – The first time I went to The House was when there was one on 9th Ave. in the city. I remembered the food was great and so was the service. Fast forward 3 years later, I wanted to try the original House for my birthday. Again the food is amazing, but the service was horrible. Initially we had a servicer that seem very nice, but they told the special way too fast for anyone to understand what they were. We told them that we werent ready yet, she said no problem and take your time. Not a minute later another server comes and practiclly demanded our order. I asked her to tell me what the specials were again and I didnt understand what she said for one of them. When I asked her to repeat, I got the most ugly look from her. The rest of the dinner was a big mix feeling for me. The food was out of this world with great fusion ideas, but the rest of the nights service continued to get worst. When we got our food, she threw down my bowl. I doubt any any of my friends will be going back. May be well go back in another few years, if they changed ther servers.
the house...the best fusion in san francisco – After enjoying The House for 8 plus years, I felt it was time to add my review.
What can I say...The food is delicious whether you are there for lunch(very well priced) or dinner. I can close my eyes and order off the menu with a point of my finger knowing that the dish will be excellent. The black cod, sea bass, short ribs, pork chop, rib eye, noodles all make my mouth water. And the desserts which are 'house made' at the restaurant are always perfection as well- crem brulee, tapioca, apple pie, chocolate torte.
Check it out and you will not be disappointed...Reservation helps immensely.
I great find in North Beach – Even though they did not have our reservation listed, they did try their best to seat us as soon as possible. Not the best table, but we only had to wait 10 minutes (it was Friday night too). The food was amazing, and I'm not easily impressed. I would highly recommend the salmon roll, crab cake, and hamachi (special for the night) for appetizers. Two of us had the entree special, black cod, which was fantastic. The other two had the duck and flatiron steak. Everyone loved what they ordered. I loved it so much I'm taking a friend from out of town there for lunch this week.
A HOUSE is not always a Home – Every dish was chipped. If you are going to charge these prices, get some new dishes. When one diner pointed out to his waitress that his glass was chipped - she turned around and rolled her eyes. Pay attention to detail and be nice to your customer.
Looks are deceiving. The Duck special was AWFUL! The duck was undercooked, veiny and flavorless; I felt like I was chewing gum and gulping it down. White asparagus sounded exotic, but was like eating a chewy, bitter, bamboo shoot.
The waitstaff constantly gave us the eye to rush us out. For an 8 pm Saturday reservation made a month in advance, and at a restaurant with these prices, we should not be rushed out the door. REALLY tacky.
The only reason I had fun at House was because of my friends; next time Id rather go to their House than this one.
yum – House is one of my favorite SF restaurants. The food is always good, fresh and creative. The quarters may be cramped, but I have always had an enjoyable meal. The salmon appetizer with hot mustard sauce is a siren calling me back each time.
House is perfect if you are interested in great food and a well selected wine list. It is not a place for a private conversation or easy parking :-).
