An old-school tiki haunt serving North Beach drinkers since the mid-1950s. – In Short
This is only a halfhearted attempt at a tiki bar, with a small handful of tiki-god statuettes and a flimsy palm tree reflecting its entire efforts. The froufrou, tropical-themed drinks normally associated with the motif are missing, replaced by a handful of reasonably priced draft beers (although they can whip out a mean mai tai). There's a pool table, a few tables and stools, and a small kitchen that sometimes serves standard bar fare.
Great Dive – I was visiting for the weekend, and ended up stumbling into this place completely by accident, and ended up having a fantastic night! The bar is small and low-key, but completely friendly and fun. From the faux-fiji style to the dingy pool table and bamboo roof over the bar, this is dive-bar fun at its best. I recommend any of the fruit-flavored soju drinks, or try one of the multi-colored island-concocotions, served complete with pineapple wedge and little paper umbrella! Beer is available by the pitcher for those with a Big Island thirst. The bartender (Sonja) is a trip, and may offer to play you a game pool for a drink. If Bryan is tending bar that night, ask for his famous Eye-Tai. And don't forget to check out the jukebox for all your Hawaiian favorites!
