Editorial Review for Apple Pan – by Jane Tunks
The Scene
Imagine Dorothy's Kansas house dropped in front of the Westside Pavilion: white clapboards, plaid wallpaper and wood paneling. Suit-and-tie types, frat boys and families alike jostle for the 20 counter seats.
The Food
The Westside's best burger, doled out in a paper wrapper, draws the carnivorous masses from all over town. The signature steak burger is a juicy, medium-thick patty on a seedless bun piled high with all the fixings--mayo, sweet relish, crunchy dill pickles, crisp iceberg lettuce and a slab of half-melted Tillamook cheddar. For an extra wallop, the hickory burger comes drenched in barbecue sauce. For dessert, ignore the crusty counterman who deadpans, "Get anything but the apple pie." Plates are reserved for the cinnamon-tinged mainstay. Get it a la mode and the heated slice will slowly melt the rich, custardy vanilla ice cream.

Insider Tips
Save TimeDon't let crowds scare you away. Ordering, devouring and paying for your burger takes less than 10 minutes, so lines move fast.
Know Before You GoDon't ask for anything not listed on the menu--a slice of tomato, a milk shake--or the old guy behind the counter may give you a tongue-lashing.
The ExtrasWalk off that burger and pie with a stroll around the Westside Pavilion.

Historic burger joint from the 40s. Service is snappy and the burgers are amazing. The apple pie is also to die for. Maybe not the best place for a romantic date, as only counter seating is available, and it is limited. Expect a wait during busy times.
Pros: burgers, fries, value, cheap, fast, service, historic
Cons: limited seating

After driving by the Apple Pan for years, my boyfriend and I finally made it to the famous diner, and all because of a blurb we read in the current issue of Sunset Magazine. Yes, it's pricey, but the burgers were worth it. We ordered the hickory burger and a steakburger ($6.75 each), plus two orders of fries ($2.50 each), which we could have easily split. We didn't save room for the pie that time, but we will someday soon. The biggest downside for us was the seating situation -- it was awkward and a bit cutthroat. But as soon as we sat down and ordered our food, everything fell into place. If you're someone who needs a lot of attention and likes to be waited on, this may not be the place for you. On the flip side, if you consider yourself thick-skinned and someone who likes to get to the heart of matters quickly, then you might really enjoy the old diner experience that the Apple Pan has to offer.
